Saber I with corrupt primary codeplug
Moderator: Queue Moderator
same situation over here. i have a saber I which some dork tried to program by soldering a couple wires onto the accessory connector contacts. he effectively converted it into a paper weight. as far as i know, repairing it would involve R&Ring an IC on the main board, which is a big PITA if you ask me. since i'm used to saber IE radios (with 8K display boards), i'm thinking of trying the following, easier fix: install an 8K display board and LCD flex down to the main board. my theory: the memory on the display board may "override" the memory on the main board and i may then end up with a working saber IE. comments welcome if anyone can say whether or not this'll work.
Hi:
Although Iunderstand the frustration, restoring a primary Code plug in " Any "
Saber is a time consuminmg process.
One also must have the 400.00 Test Jig,
the know how, and be able to make the
"proper" evaluation 1st.
Failure to follow that proceedure, is sort
like not followig the programmimg saftey
percautions, and could land your radio
inooperatable forever.
I can restore most of them, but its NOT a 5min job, and well, I can still do them for
less than 1/2 of what Motorola Charges.
Sometimes, one can spend Hours trying to
correct a simple mistake.....I had one case
where a Plug from a Clone Rib Box was pulled
out during the write process, and well, ended
the life of a MTS2000 and cost the customer
279.00 to get the radio fixed...
Anyhow, good hunting !

If I understand this correctly the Microcomputer contains the code (in EEPROM) for the Saber to operate and execute normally. Corrupting it simply means it was overwritten with the improper code. Seems like the "Micro" would still be good and would just need a re-initialization or re-booting (bootstrapping) and reprogramming.
By the way Motorola has lots of info on this MC68HC11 Micro if you do a google search on it.
Just curious to know if the corrupted codeplug fix always involves a "Micro" replacement that is so often mentioned here ?

sounds to me like that would still involve removing the IC to reprogram/reformat it with the correct programmer, which would likely be more expensive than a replacement IC. i don't think the RSS is any help once your codeplug is corrupted. On 2002-04-05 05:17, N4UMJ wrote:

Hi:
Just as a Update !, I am planning to be more
carfull when giving Technical Advice as I had
one board menmber take some advice, and he was not happy with his results, such as life.
Anyhow, Restoring a Pirmary Code Plug in a
Saber is not all that tough if you have the
Proper Service Tools and basic service Skills. Without them, its a hopeless cause.
With this Jig a REN4011A one can serivce a Saber with ease....But they are not chaep.
And I will not get into the " Cheap Way "
as if something goes wrong, I do not wish
to take responsibility for your radio becomming worse off than it is now.
Here is a Ebay Photo of what one looks like
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 1336666687
Also, if you can get your hands on a National
Service Trainning Guide for Sabers, that will
Help ( but will not solve ) all the issues.
<b><h3>In 95% of the cases, a Saber Can Be Restored
WITHOUT having to replace Any Componets on the Board. Being Stupid by Grounding the Wrong Pins, Locations, and the like will be
costly to your pocket book</b></h3>....So the above information is deemed correct, but you accept
all risk in using it.
Its sorta like the fellow who makes a MTX/HT600 Cable, builds the diagram from
the Batlab .jpg, and blows his radio up
and blames batlabs for the damage....Right
( Don't laugh ! Its happend [ and more than
once] )

Hi:
OK: We will try this one last time. Any
board bashing I will cease immediately.
All infotrmation is to be used at your own
risk. Serious Damage could result if you
slip !
What is happening at Pin 37 of U400?
<b><h3>This should always be 5 volts DC ]</b></h3>
Stable?
Toggling up / down
Voltage ?
<img src="http://www2.4dcomm.com/metrotech/u400_v2.jpg">
After we hear what is happening at this
location, will proceed as time permits. Maybe this will help others.
Also, there is NO Guarantee this will solve
the problem, but is a step in the right
direction.

HI:
OK, next step and PLEASE NOTE THE CANVAS
has been ROTATED 90o. Is to see " What
is happening @ <b><h3>Pin 19 of U400</b></h3>
<img src="http://www2.4dcomm.com/metrotech/u400_19.jpg">
Is this Toggling? Moving around? Unstable?
Measured with a GOOD DVM or Analog Meter.
<b><h3>[ This should be a steady 5VDC]</b></h3>
From there, will proceed to the next step.
And YES, this does apply to other Sabers that
have the same U400 Micro-processor.

Try going to the create codeplug function in the rss and create a codeplug for that model and bandsplit, then using a slower computer, a 386 or 486 dump the new codeplug into the radio and use the rpf settings. You will have to re-align the radio in the service portion afterwards. As for replacing an entire eeprom because of corrupt info in the codeplug, that's CRAP with a capital C! I have dealt with hundreds of sabers with corrupt codeplugs and most were because of computers operating too fast. Trust me, try what i have recommended before you send the radio to someone. If you still have a problem let me know and I'll do it for the cost of shipping the radio and the cost of sending it back.

Hi:
I have been working with this
fellow via email and reporting the
results for others to see if its
applicable to their situation.
<b>His problem as reported to me is
that the radio will NO Longer Read [ OR ] Write ( Period ) I/O Serial Bus Error</b> and as such even creating a new code plug is useless...Been there, done that already.
What happens is the radio is in a Unstable
Condition, and with a few Known Facts one can
avoid a costly repair.
<b><h3>As I mentioned already as well, Replacement
of a IC is NOT required in 95% of the cases.</b></h3>
Anyhow, this Code Plug Corruption is a result of a Clone Box, A Clone Cable appears OK, and perhaps a computer issue.
[ Correction, he does have a Saber Mic Plug ]
He has also reported that he is able to
Read / Write to all of his other radios, and
everything is working fine.
As he emails me with the particulars, I will
post the results for others to see if they
should have the same problem.

I will not hold you or anyone else responcible for further damage to my radio.
I have done the above tests and my results are as follows

pls help

Hi John:
<b><h3>No Code Plug Creation in the
world will help that problem. Your
Radio is definately in a un-stable
condition<b></h3>
As I have been helping many others, I will
try and help you as well.
Best to email me direct, and I will
email the details to you as needed.
