I carry my laptop with me in a bag and was wondering if anyone has made a external battery for a Uniden 780xlt
was looking at something that lays in the bottom of the bag and allows the scanner to be on top.
I carry a uhf and VHF portable with me but wanted to monitor the trunking agencies and thought this would be a sweet idea.
like you see in the movies the guy opens the briefcase and has the radio in it
anyone know how to do this? or done it?

Best thing you can do is look in the manual and see what kind of current the scanner draws. From there, go out and buy a gel-cel battery. You can then get another power adapter to hook from the battery into the scanner. For the antenna, you could take a rubber duck and cable tie it somehow so that it's in a position of your choosing.
There's not a lot to it, just get the battery, hook it up to the scanner and have fun. Don't forget the antenna.

Several companies make portable carry kits for the Yaesu FT817 radio which include the battery for this 5-watt radio. Size of the 817 is similar to a scanner but you will have to do some research to see if it will fit.
The manufacturers are usually in QST and CQ magazines every month. If you're not an ARRL member some newsstands carry both mags, or your library might have a subscription.

A little pricey, but this is by far the best thing going for the 780.

No solder, built-in charging circuit, squelch-operated backlight timer. Slick as snot.
