What type of antenna cable or what would you do here.

Folks

i am thinking about trying to install a mobile radio in our com-center to act as a reduntant back up incase we have a major failure of our system. The problem is that or Comm center is on the 1st floor of a 6 story building. I was thinking about using a CDM 1550 or somthing that will read MDC ID's so that we can use it as a decoder as well. We are in the uhf band 464.xxx . I was wondering if somthing like 9913 or somthing else could be used rather than hardline to save money. The radio will mainly used to recieve, but we would be transmitting from time to time, all the repeaters we need to hit are very close by and from the roof i can get in full quiet witha 1watt portable. Any suggestions as far as cable?
Also i was thinking if there is a tone remote out there that will allow full functionality of a CDM giving us channel change and the MDC decode ect. If that was the case we could get by with a tiny antenna run and have more RF power available. I looked but did not find such an animal.
Any suggestions would be appreciated

thanks

The MC2000 tone remote together with tone remote adapter and a CDM radio placed at the top floor will do this for you. The MC2000 has most of the MDC features you want like channel switching and MDC ID, emergency etc.

But any decent antenna cable will be good enough if you don’t like the above expense. If using RG213 cable, your loss for a 100 feet run is about 5 dB. This still leaves you lots of power with a 25-watt radio and a simple antenna.

The MC2000 option is going to be pretty pricey. However, on UHF and 60 or so feet, I wouldn't use anything other than hardline. Puttng a mobile on the top floor introduces another link to the chain that can fail. MC2000 remotes and their line adapters are fairly robust, but it is the "what if" problem. Keep it as simple as possible. It will be expensive either way, but do it right.

A good choice for access base antenna would be a Sinclair 310 C or equivalent half wave folded dipole.

Good luck.

If leaving the radio in the comm center, LMR400 or LMR600 will work with little loss. It's also flexible.

guys

thanks for the help and suggestions, i think the cost of all the cable and antenna and conectors/labor would be cheaper and more reliable for a "back up" than the mc2000. LOL i almost forgot that we would need to get the rss and cable for the remote, there goes another several hundred there alone
' :P

thanks again

We used LMR600 and CDM1550 for that exact situation, works well.

I hate to even tell you the price, but the MC2000 is likely around $1200US plus RSS. You will also need a tone remote adapter probably for the same cost a CDM radio.

Just a LMR feed line starts to look very attractive.
