I've always wondered how Big M can get away with telling you that you can't sell something old when you buy something newer.
Does GM or Ford tell you that you can't sell your old car when you go to buy a new one?
Are you supposed to just put your old car on the curb for the trash? When it might still be usable for someone else? N O T !!!!!!!
Even the auto makers offer to buy back the old one (at a greatly reduced rate)! But at least they make an offer.
"Big M" can kiss my hairy, white, fat tush right on the brown eye!

Thats a good one!!!!!!!!!
Anyhow, I think (my 1/2 cent worth) that IF motorola would stop persuing people who are selling the RSS with a radio and the such, and concentrated more on making a better, more relaible radio, then things would be MUCH better at motorola.
See how long the Mocom 70's and the such were/are in service.....Now, Do you actually think that an HT750 or an XTS radio will even be operational in 10 years?! Maybe, but it will surely have been re-cased or ran over a few times. AS for mobiles, they can't even release a non-glitched CDM series radio without having to recall them for major firmware updates/ fixes or whatever motorola terms it these days.
My local county PD had MX series radios for a LOnnnng time and they ALL worked till the day they were pulled from service. And remember the MT-500 radios? You could beat a perp with one of those as easily as you can with an astro saber and get the same surrender!! LOL
Ended up being my 3 1.2 cents....

It's all about money. New technology is attractive to the buyer, so there's a hook to sell more product even though the old product may be just as good from a functional perspective. Having new equipment provides a comfort factor that old equipment, though reliable, just doesn't provide.
Newer computer-based radios are more profitable for Motorola because of all the additional support equipment and services that come with it.
Heck, even I will admit that for my needs, an Astro Saber is overkill along the lines of hunting deer with a B-52. I could get along just FINE with a four channel high power HT220 more than 99 percent of the time. You didn't actually REPAIR those radios, you just threw them at a brick wall and they'd start working again.
The Mocom 70 was the best mobile radio ever made. Practically NOBODY knows how to fix them because it wasn't ever necessary to learn how. They don't break. They're the epitome of conservative, simple, smart, and reliable engineering. I've seen literally dozens of Mocom 70's get torn down for recycling because people wouldn't buy them for five bucks a pop, with accessories, though they were four channel radios and most of the people who turned their noses up at those 'useless old junk radios' wouldn't need more than four channels anyway. So they spend four or five hundred bucks on an all-singing, all-dancing digital wonder-matic radio and end up using the same stupid four channels with less power, relatively lousy specs, and a warranty card that they've got a good chance of actually NEEDING, when one fifth of that money could have been used to turn that Mocom 70 into a reliable thoroughbred no-nonsense workhorse you can count on for many years to come.
People don't always make intelligent decisions. I'm guilty of that myself, but at least I'm mature enough to admit it. I like my fancy toys with blue LED's on them!

Blue LED's have been READILY available commercially for years. Even Radio Shack sells them.
Just search on ebay for 'blue LED' and you'll get literally hundreds of items.
They're quite nice. They can be used in RGB full color displays as in the giant displays in sports stadiums, among other things.
One of my other hobbies is my high end audio system. I love music that sounds practically like a live performance. Here's the company that makes my amps: http://www.krellonline.com
All their products use blue LED's as power indicators.

Hey guys, if you want to know almost everything about LEDS, go here: http://ledmuseum.home.att.net/ledleft.htm
Lots of information and places to get SMT or conventional LEDS.
I'll admit I also like blue LEDS. Not going to change my astro saber's LEDS, but have done my Yaesu VX-5R in blue LEDS. It looks sweet!

Anyone know if there is/was a version of an astro saber that has lighted buttons on the front?
I don't mean the dtmf pad but the blue buttons above the speaker.
I have seen a radio a few times on the "COPS" show, and it looks quite like an astro saber but the lcd and the buttons below it lit in either blue or green.
Thanks

Elroy,
Krell??? Man, the radio business must pay better where you are than it does here!
You may end up starting a new thread here. I know a lot of radio guys that are also stereo nuts. I thought I was crazy when (a few years back) I shelled out the price of a new car (small one) for a set of IRS Betas.
Did you happen to see the write up a few years back on Fabio's system? I am pretty sure he uses Krell amps. Martin Logan Statements in front and Infinity IRS V's for the rear surrounds. Shhesh! That must have cost as much as a hundred Astro Sabers!

Yes, I read that Stereophile article on Fabio's systems. Martin Logan Statements (original series), powered by Krell MDS-600 amps, if I recall. Four chassis monoblock pair, with separate power supplies. Too expensive to be brought to market, or so they say. There are only two pairs of them in existence. Fabio has one pair, and the other pair is owned by Dan D'Agostino, Mr. Krell himself.
My speakers are Aerial Acoustics 10T's. I'm moderately serious about this hobby.
But, I only paid 500 bucks for my Krell KMA-160 monoblocks, plus shipping. That's 500 for the PAIR.
You see, they'd been in a house fire. They weren't burned, but they got hosed down along with everything else, getting all kinds of fire ash and other crud in them, and then they were left to rot in a basement for two years without even a rinsing off. I had my work cut out for me. I tore them completely apart, resoldered EVERY connection, tested EVERY driver and output transistor manually and out of circuit, refurbished/replaced every nut, bolt, screw, and washer, and essentially did a 'frame off' restoration on them. It took two straight weeks, four hours a night.
Now they're flawless and have been totally reliable for the more than four years I've had them. They're dead quiet, have huge headroom (I've never clipped one), and put out a LOT of heat! Their sound is magnificent, of course.
No, that wasn't the best deal I've made in audio/video equipment as of yet. That prize goes to my Sony VPH-722 video projector that's hanging from the ceiling and shooting a FINE picture onto a 4x8 foot screen. I paid FIFTY bucks for it from an electronic junkyard and it was both flawless and had nearly zero hours on the tubes. THAT was my best deal!

Astrogoth,
Do you have any further info on this radio?
I recall now for sure seeing a FBI agent on the cops show with an astro, Dont know if it was VHF or UHF, But it surely had the color keypad and I thought that it was lit up also, but maybe it was just the colors of the keys that looked that way.
Anyone else have any ideas?

motorola declined me - stated too many people in my zipcode have astro rss, and i could pay them to program the radio..Bugs Bunny wrote:Not hard at all. All Saber SI's had the same blue-green keys as Astro Sabers. What you saw was a color variance in the printing or source photograph.d119 wrote:I have an old M catalog somewhere they sent me years ago that was back when the MT1000's, people finders, and analog sabers were current items. It shows the Saber SI with the blue keys on it, pretty nifty. I like the green better though.
Just for curiosity's sake, I wonder how much money you have to promise Motorola to get radios made with uniquely colored housings.

cHAD, i WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE REJECTION LETTER, DO YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO SCAN AND EITHER EMAIL OR POST TO THE GROUP.
I myself, have purchased over 30 different rss programs from scrotumola and they never said no, possibly since i have spent the better part of 2 years salary with them since I started dealing with them directly with an account about 3 years ago.

Unbelievable is all I have to say! I do know of individuals who are not allowed to have anything from Motorola in their possession, due to their previous activities with 'illegal RSS'. There was one guy up in Toronto Canada who had programmed users on a system he did not own according to a Motorola press release.

A press release from Motorola about someone programming on a system he's not authorized for?
Sounds like a growing rumor to me.
I just got done checking Motorola's press releases for this entire year and found no reference to that.
Post the link and prove it.
Otherwise, I'll have to put on my moderator hat and I'll delete your posting as a blatant falsehood.

Well I used to be able to buy RSS software when I was in TN. I called "M" today and told them I needed MCS2000 software and explained that I have been buying software from them for over 8 yrs, they said that I am in an area witn may "M" dealers and I would no longer be able to purchase the software. I would continue to recieve my updates but no more new stuff. Well I guess I will just have to have my ex-wife in TN buy it for me, since the closest "M" shop is 50 miles away.
I am calling the regional guy tomm. to see what is up, if he can't answer I will call my friends in DC and see if they can help me.

Elroy, please read
Elroy,
I remember seeing the press release a few years back about the guy in Canada who had hacked into a trunk sys or two, I believe one of the systems was in NYC as well. If I remember correctly, he was also fooling around with factory software and doing conversions as well. There was a radio board at the time that it was posted on, as well as some M paperwork I saw come through the shop. So I guess it's not just just a old wives tale, so to speak.

i made many calls to motorola (and after giving MANY people the model# and Serial# of my radio), and they still refuse to sell me the RSS. As far as the threat of posting on the internet about their bad service, they stated that they would be able to file a civil suit against me for slander...Elroy Jetson wrote:I'd tell them that I'm about to deploy to an overseas location for my work situation, and it's absolutely certain that nobody there will have the software I need, so please send it to me or I'll publicize your bad service all over the whole damned internet.

as far as leaving the country with the radio, they said that would be illigal... the radios are to be used in the USA only because it has a hardware encryption module for digital and analog communications...
Motorola needs to change their policy, OR INCLUDED THE SOFTWARE WITH THE RADIO... i spend over $1000 for my saber III years ago when it 1st came out (like 11 or so years ago...) and had to pay people to program it...now i have a saberIII, MT2000, HT1000, Astro SaberIII, Visar, and XTS3000... and legally i would have to pay people to program them...

If you tell the TRUTH about a customer service experience, you're untouchable.
Slander applies ONLY if you are NOT truthful about the situation.
They're being PRICKS.
Under the circumstances, I wholeheartedly support the concept of simply pirating the software you need, though I will not participate.
You have a right to be able to program your own radios for your own legal purposes, and you have a right to not be dependent on some shop to program it for you...for money, no less.
If they're going to be cocksuckers about it like they are, then dammit, they DESERVE to go under. I'll switch to competitor's products if it gets much worse.
When you stop serving your customers, you stop serving any useful purpose. Motorola is SO close to getting to that position that it isn't even funny.
Head up ass and locked. That's Motorola today. Welcome to the future.

You might try contacting the Attorney General in California and explain your position, there may be some legal stuff he can do. If you were to be supporting a customers radio system and Motorola said you could not have the software then they would essentiall be putting you out of business (Restriant of Trade) so check with them.

As indicated by Chad in his emails to me:
"Notice there is NO DATE or NO NAME OF AN ACTUAL PERSON
They did provide me with a list of people in my zipcode…all of which want $100+ to program my 254 channel astro saber iii
(most of them were non-business/personal users of the software)

Seems a little strange to me!

Gee, that's funny. I never saw an expiration date on MY license agreement.
Did any of you???
I signed mine back in 1993 and it was 2001 before I ordered
my first official title! They had to find my records in the 'old'
computer system, and I had to fax a copy of my signed agreement to them because they COULDN'T find it, but I was not asked to sing a new one.
