Both the front shield and main board are different on the System Saber and Saber series. The only things that both radios have in common are the actual RF modules , PA, VCO etc.

I asked Monty the same question when I first got into Sabers and Systems Sabers. His response was to just get a systems saber in the bandsplit I wanted to use. I'm not sure exactly why but, he recommended against trying to use saber RF modules in a Systems Saber.
Something to note: I've seen several different styles of RF modules on Sabers as far as their contacts. (Some used contacts, some used pins, etc).

If you get a Saber or Syssaber with contacts rather than pins stay away, it's an older crap radio. The module change from Saber to Systems saber is actually pretty easy. A system saber will do 255 channels, have single buttom talkaround with core 6 and above, and has great scan features. They all come with type II
trunking, used on Fed systems.
Stick with system saber III only. Best radio next to a astro saber.
The RF modules are the same as a regular saber. The display has the brains and mem. The mother board is also unique to the system saber.
The system saber also needs its own system saber RSS. DOS only.
Also you should use a slow computer with that RSS.
All system sabers have securenet. You will need a secure module or jumper blank module. That will route the audio to where it need to go.
Best bet is to get some cheap secure module for the sys saber and not enable it is RSS. That way it will not beep in plaintext mode.

Some years ago somebody told me, the modules used in Systems Sabers are selected for tighter tolerances.
