Usually the better installation programs create a log of what files were installed, and where. This file often has an extension of .ISU and is what's used by the uninstaller so it can clean up the mess made by the installer. If this file is gone, about all you can do is remove the individual files and the folder that the program was stored in manually. You would have no idea of what kinds of things were left in the registry, if any, nor what to search for if you wanted to remove them yourself. You'd also have to remove any entries on the START menu and icons on the desktop. About all you can do at this point is just install the newer version and go on with life. Hopefully the new version won't complain about finding remnants of the old version, and prevent you from installing it.

If you still have the old version, you might be able to install it again, then uninstall it and hope things get cleaned up enough to let you put in the new version. The moral of the story is that you should not remove files manually when there's an uninstall program or procedure to do it for you.

In desperation, there's always "format c:" and you can start all over again by reinstalling the operating system and all your programs and files, but I don't recommend that unless you really have no other choice and everything else has failed.

That would only work if the other installation was done on a machine that had the same software previously loaded, and in the same place. The installation program puts info in that ISU file depending on what's already there, so it won't copy one of its own files that may be older, on top of a file with the same name that's newer. Then, when it has to be uninstalled, the program will leave that file present because it knows something else might be using it.

Of course, not all installations do this. Some just load their own newer or older files on top of existing ones, and the uninstaller leaves a lot of stuff behind because it wasn't written to do the entire job.

At this point, I'd recommend that you try to find all the files and registry entries and delete them, then install the program all over. As usual, I take no responsibility for anything that doesn't work when you get done.
