Scanning and more...

Post by fireradio »

Hi all -- I have a couple simple questions about scanning on Astro Portables.

On a Model I portable, can you have multiple scan lists? And can you user-program the scan lists from the radio?

On another note -- If a radio is flashed for Smartnet Operation (but does not actually include the conventional "flash package"), it can do conventional or "direct" mode, right?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure you can have multiple scan lists and can even program them if you set one of the side buttons for scan list program. But you will have to program them blind, and that may not be worth it. Hmmmm....that will not be worth it.

Yes you can do conventional in a trunking capable radio.

Yeah, I know...it would suck pretty bad not to have a display. But I'm trying to get my hands on an Astro portable, and although I'd like a II or III, if I can get a good deal on a good Model I, then I may have to take it.

One more stupid question: How many different scan lists can you have in an Astro portable? Is it 16, or can you have a scan list for every channel, or what?

Thanks y'all...hopefully once I can find an Astro to play with, I'll be able to come up with better, more challenging questions

You can have 20 scan lists with fifteen channels per list. Each channel in the radio can be assigned one of the 20 scanlists. Any channel can scan any list even if the particular channel is not in the list. If scanning is really important to you go for the ASIII because there is a keypad. It will make life easier programming the scan lists. If you plan on having someone else do the programming, you should work with them closely. I hope this helps.
