Astro system 'reprogramming request'

Post by Josh »

What is the purpose of over-the-air reprogramming as described in the APCO-25 standard?

The system I am monitoring is an APCO system with APCO-16 control channel. What would happen if I had my XTS3000 request a reprogramming? Would the central controller direct the radio to a channel where it would be programmed with the current system codeplug? This is an interesting feature, sort of like 'private call'- it would disallow police from needing those damn NextHells to supplement their radio needs.

Its used by the radio system to update radio's with new parameters...Its easier for the system to program 3000 radios over the air when they are turned on then for them to be brought into the shop. IF your radio is not authorized on the system, your radio won't be updated (or shouldn't be).

Wow, this is interesting and it makes sense.

There are a number of cool features on APCO-25 systems.

The APCO-25 standard was definitely well planned out. I've gone over the docs and it's quite interesting.

But APCO-25 features won't work over a 3600 baud control channel. In order to use the full potential it has to be a complete APCO-25 trunked system not using analog whatsoever.

Also, the standard covers all operation including trunking, conventional, data, and vocoding (which IMBE was chosen for). APCO-25 trunking is just a subcategory and most seem to mix everything together as one thing.
