How to connect a KVL to XTS 3000, wiring?
Hello all.
I tried to find from Batlabs site a drawing or schematic of a cable to connect KVL T3011DX to XTS3000, but for some reason I didn't find it.
Did such thing exist at all on the batlabs.com?
If someone here knows more about this cable it would help a lot.

Well, I should have had done my homework first and done the search. Here's the answer:
Multi-Radio KVL Cable?
<pre></pre>To some this might be just a repeat of what was written here more than once a while ago. So be it. Then again, I didn't find this info on the http://www.batlabs.com/pinouts.html page, where I went first.
EDIT: Corrected KVL pinout numbers and wiring. KVL pinout numbers were incorrect from pin 6 to 10 on other row ;)
EDIT2: It turns out that the pin numbers of the XTS connector presented here by other batboard writer were incorrecter, or should I say not incorrect but really different from how it is presented on batlabs.com. Pinout corrected.

Re: How to connect a KVL to XTS 3000, wiring?
Here's what I built on this weekend.
I already had a ribless programming cable (kawarad or similar, from Ebay). I came up with an idea of using this cable to do both jobs, programming with CPS and keyloading with KVL.
As one might guess, the XTS connector didn't have all pins needed on the board, so I took them from some other connector I didn't need anymore and soldered them on.
In my case I also have a TKN8351A KVL/Hirose cable that I have used to keyload Sabers, I figured that I might use same Hirose connector with this one as well. (personal note: Getting Hirose connectors is hard enough, but they are expensive too!)
Well here's what I made.
Here's the connector of the KVL and wiring from it to Hirose connector. Note that there's the 1 kohm resistor between pins 2 and 10 on the KVL end.
And here's how it's on the XTS 3000 end. Well, there's the whole cable.
So why there's these two diodes and why it goes through KVL?
As long as KVL is not connected on the other end, radio remains on normal mode. But when KVL is connected, both pins 10 (Clear To Send) and 12 (Mode Control) on the radio are grounded via 1 kohm resistor and radio goes into KEYLOAD mode. The reason why there's diodes is that otherwise keeping pins 10 and 12 together might interfere normal programming.
I've tested this setup and it seems to be working well.
(Note: Pictures are from batlabs.com, edited and re-drawn by me.)

Here's some pictures as requested and promised.
Here's general overlook of the cable finished.
New pins added. Found them from cables that were not needed anymore.
Here's inside look of the connector board. Note that a copper strip between pins 7 and 9 is cut. Originally there was an empty hole on pin 7 and the copper strip short circuits it to pin 9 too.
Here's a picture of female Hirose connector (type HR10-7J-6S).

anyone have the info on order that female hirose connector?
Re: How to connect a KVL to XTS 3000, wiring?
They're available from Farnell, for about $46 each. (Not $4.60, I mean forty-six dollars.)

Yup, I concur that. Those are really expensive connectors. In Finland (from Elfa) one female Hirose connector costed around 24 Euros, about 33 USD. Male Hirose connectors are bit cheaper. But anyways, those little bastards are way too expensive.mr.syntrx wrote:They're available from Farnell, for about $46 each. (Not $4.60, I mean forty-six dollars.)

Re: How to connect a KVL to XTS 3000, wiring?
When hunting for the male Hirose connector to use in building a keyloading cable for the Saber KVL/audio adapter way back, the Digikey part number I came across was HR111-ND. This is since NLA.
These are the part numbers I've come up with currently (Digikey P/N, Hirose P/N):
HR1586-ND HR10A-7P-6P(73) 6 CONTACT PLUG W/PIN INSERT $11.88
HR1588-ND HR10A-7P-6S(73) 6 CONTACT PLUG W/SOCKET INSERT $11.30
As you can see, these Plug P/N's are somewhat less expensive than the Jack P/N referenced above (HR10-7J-6S). These are ROHS compliant, and are the solder-cup type.

Is it necessary to connect the extra two earth connections on pins 10 and 12? Are these all tied to ground inside the radio anyway?oh2glg wrote:Code: Select all

Re: How to connect a KVL to XTS 3000, wiring?
Disregard - all three are required to be connected. It appears this is what triggers the KEYLOADING mode in teh 3k
