ASTRO W3 Control Head onto a Waris mobile radio - possible??

Post by losangelescop »

Would it be possible at all to modify the ASTRO W3 control head for use on a GM328 or GM338 (Australian version of CDM750/CDM1250) or even a GM300 to control all the functions. In my car, all I have room for is a microphone on the dash, literally, nowhere to mount a radio or even a remote mount control head. I would rather have all the controls on the mic. Is it at all possible? Maybe like changing the plug, a minor hardware adjustment, and plugging it into the 16 pin accessory plug on the back of the Waris mobiles? I heard that this was once done somehow and want to know what would be involved, if it could even work to begin with???

Thanks pplz!

No, I don't think it'd be possible. The way the Astro HHCH "talks" to the Astro mobiles is wayy differen't than anything a CDM could make sense of.

Depends on whether or not the Waris mobiles use the SB9600 protocol to communicate with the control head. I was quite surprised to find that a W3 head will operate a MCS2000.. to an extent. And even if the CDM radios use SB9600, the software button assignments for the radio itself have to match the W3 lineup, or you get wacky things like the PTT button on the W3 head turning the radio on and off.

So yeah, the short answer is: highly unlikely.

Thanks guys,

Shame it couldn't be done lol, i really could have used that mounting space :x . Are there any ways you know of instead that could possibly help with my space issue? The car I have is a floorshift so the gearstick is in the middle of the two front seats, and there is also a factory standard console there, only mounting space I have is a slot under the car's AM/FM radio, and it's not big enough for the purpose required. Thanks.

Nic.

Buy a W3 Astro Spectra or XTL5000 and use that instead of the GM/CDM?
