OH.. Motorola Gods, once again I call upon your wisdom.
I have a 45w, UHF Spectra A9 head with a DEK and the PA/Siren unit. I got the radio up and running and was able to read and program code pluges. I added the the DEK and programmed all the buttons. When I try to use the PA fuction, the LED below the PA button on the DEK comes on but I don't get any audio out of the speaker leads from the PA/Siren unit. When I key the mic, I hear a faint pop sound coming from the radio's speaker. None of the siren options work, the LEDs below the DEK buttons do not light. Any ideas about what I may be doing wrong or do I have a bad PA/Siren unit?
How do you have the dek box wired/connected to the control head and where is the mic connected? Have you tried programming the control head for the siren functions and removing the dek to see if the siren system works then?
Hi Jason, the mic is plugged in to the back of the control head, the DEK is connected to the control head with a short cable. one end plugs into the VIP section on the control head and the other end which looks like a mic plug is connected to the DEK.
I have not tried removing the DEK and programming the siren/pa functions to the control head. I have tried another DEK unit that I have with the same results.
Any Ideas...?
I will program the siren/pa function to control head tonight and see what happens.
I do believe that you not only have to program the buttons on the dek, but also you have to tell the system how many dek boxes you have (ie 1)etc. Try that . also make sure that you have 12 volts going into your siren amp . Hope that helps
You also have to "Enable Siren/PA" in the RSS separately from programming the DEK options.
But before you can do that you have to determine what kind of siren you have. Not all of the packages made over the years have all the options like manual wail, manual yelp, hi-lo, etc. You can also enable the siren and not the PA and vice versa on some models.
The tough thing about the RSS is that when you are programming, it appears the RSS has accepted your selections, then when you write to the codeplug it doesn't take the options you selected. Some trial and error necessary here.
We have 800 Trunking (Type II SmartNet) Spectras with the C-9 control head and DEK Siren/PA's.
The software manual says you can and the RSS will let you program the siren directly to the control head giving you the impression you can do away with the DEK. The codeplug even accepts the programming without a wimper.
But when you fire the radio and try the buttons on the control head, no workie! Siren/PA only works with the DEK.
Thanks for the replies. I tried removing the DEK and programming the pa/siren to the control head buttons; same symtoms as I originally posted. I do have 12v to the siren/pa and 1 DEK added in the software. I will try YoChief's Idea of only setting up either the PA or Siren by itself. One curious thing I saw when I opened up the pa/siren, there is a large silver box/cover in the center, when I opened that cover I saw an empty IC/EPROM socket. There is one other IC/EPROM installed. I'm wondering if there is an IC/EPROM missing???
Sure sounds like you're missing one of the EEPROM that stores the settings and or the tones to be generated by the unit. Try another Siren/PA unit if you have one. Mine works flawlessly. Finally getting around to wiring up the horn/ring circuit as well.
Anyone have thoughts on a speaker selection for the systems 9000 unit? I know the Federal Signal Dynamax is a no no to use. Currently have a single FS100 type speaker on it. Any suggestions on compact speakers. How about the whelen speakers? I know CPI makes good stuff.
The empty socket is correct. That is for adding a jumper cable to either a vrs board or option boards for the x9000 radio. If your system is wired up properly and programmed correctly you must be having a hardware failure somewhere. What is the model number of the cable and siren amp you are using?
