800 MHZ Trunking RSSI

Post by sourapple613 »

What is the RSSI needing to consistently have good transmissions and receive. I don't know how much it will vary from system to system but I'm hoping to get some ballpark figures to help me out.

Could someone give a scale similar to
1-10 Not gonna work worth beans
20-30 Works 25% of the time
30-50 Works 40 % of the time
50-90 Works 75% of the time
Etc.

However you want to break it down.
Would like to know it for both mobiles and handhelds.
The purpose of this is to carry a handheld around (or drive around) and estimate where it will work and how well. Also to see how well it will work inside larger buildings inside our response area. It will also help to establish where our dead zones are.

Haven't converted yet but it might be in the future.
This is a motorola P25 system utilizing both 700 and 800 MHZ primarily 800 as most towers wont have 700 frequencies.
Test radio is a Moto XTS2500 and XTL5000.

I searched but couldn't find what I was looking for exactly.

Thanks.

RSSI Acceptable Threshold : The factory default = 34
RSSI Good Threshold : The factory default = 40
RSSI Very Good Threshold : The factory default = 46
RSSI Excellent Threshold : The factory default = 4D for system version 6.3 and above, The factory default = 46 for system version 6.2

So basically anything less than 34 is risky?
46 and above works well?
And for example showing 88 I should have no problems?
I thought RSSI was anywhere from 0-255?
How come so little difference between the thresholds?

for sure

46 and above works well?
yes

And for example showing 88 I should have no problems?
no problems

those values are in hex, min is 0 max is FF if you convert those to decimal you do get 0-255

How come so little difference between the thresholds?
not too sure, possibly thats all the difference needed between a good signal and a bad one

Keep in mind that 34 in hex is equal to 52 in decimal so the chart in dec would be as follows:

RSSI Acceptable Threshold : The factory default = 52 dec
RSSI Good Threshold : The factory default = 64 dec
RSSI Very Good Threshold : The factory default = 70 dec
RSSI Excellent Threshold : The factory default = 77 dec for system version 6.3 and above, The factory default = 70 dec for system version 6.2

dont you just love how moto uses hex in once place and dec for another for the same thing?!?

Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't even think about converting the numbers from hex to decimal.
