Just looking for info on an Astro Saber SI
Can someone just briefly explain what the SI model is, and does it require it's own version of RSS or can any shop with the Astro RSS program it.

saber si
why would LA use the Si since it's only an 800Mhz radio?
i thought only the LA Fire Dept was on 800?
FYI - i have the original sales packet for the Si, comparing it to the MRK, etc.. and touting the "flash-portability" of it. this packet also contains the plain-vanilla motorola brochure for the Si ... i might scan and send this to one of the guys here when i get home.
saw one at dayton one time that a guy had put a UHF RF board (similar to MTS) into it... worked fine.
software is a hit and miss. there are about 3 versions that float around...when you find the one that works with your radio, you're in luck! as i recall, two of the versions that float around are "LAB" and allow programming the radio, generating new codeplugs, etc...and the software WAS able to create VHF, UHF and 800 codeplugs. all sales literature indicated the radio was for 800 only though.
no factory support what-so-ever. there are only a few guys left that probably even remember it (!)
definately a "curio and relic"

Motorola DEFINATELY told me that LAPD was using Saber Si's, but then they're just the manufacturer, so...
These folks that told me this (on a very detailed conference call concerning MODAT) were Motorola High Tier Government Sales Marketing Executives, as well as Motorola SP Engineers from the SP Secure Engineering Group in Schaumberg, and Motorola Engineers from Boyton Beach, Fl. Also on the line on this conference call were two software engineers from the RSS Group. Probably not qualified ...

Saber SI
Boynton Beach was a paging plant..which by the way if you need a facility or want to start your own company...we got some buildings for sale.. Ft. Lauderdale is the Radio products group. They where in 800MHZ as a production radio, San Francisco had them and a few cities scattered thru the Mid West, US Govt. also for some agencies in large metro area, for use on the local 800 Systems. There where some VHF and UHF protos, but the interesting thing to see would be the product sheet shows in band availibility. 800 was the only one I ever saw. Modat by the way is not listed on the option sheets only, MDC. Radios where flashable... and encryption capable...engineer described it to me as a folded MTS . As to a lot of people in the Motorola Sales and Marketing... they rate poorly in the facts and capability issues...ie told us DVP-XL DES-XL would not work with digital... we usually go to the techs. I caught one of there sales guys in a error on the multi-key issue, we had to talk to tech to discover what we should request. One of the techs here used to work with them a little and I'll see what he knows.
According to a Motorola New Product Service Brief dated March 1993....
The Saber SI will have models H03UCC6PW9AN - H03UCD6PW9AN - H03UCH6PW9AN
The radio is available as No keypad/no dispay, Limited keypad and display, full keypad and dispay. Saber SI "R" Models 1&2 are available. System software options include: Conventional, Startsite, Smartnet, Enhanced Smartnet, and other Secure Conventional or Private Trunking Systems. Offered in 800MHz with 3 Watt power. FLASHport technology will allow for new software packages and features to be upgraded through external programming. The RF board is similar to the MTS2000 800 MHZ board, and the front covers are similar to new Astro Saber radios.
--That was pretty much was the first paragraph said. I cut out some parts about ruggerized models. Looking thru the RSS book, all the screen examples showed 800 Mhz freq's.
--Again, LAPD uses a UHF-T freq plan, and LAFD does use a conventional 800 system (unless that's changed). Now, LAPD may have bought a couple of Saber SI's for the 800 nationwide law enforcement channels, but I HIGHLY doubt it as it wouldn't be cost effective, and there would almost be no use for it in a city like LA. Any radios set to that band would be at the communication centers or mobile command post type of situations (disasters etc).
Now I have to ask (not flaming you at all), what are you doing that prompts all these "high level" talks that you are having with M?

Lowband radio. The original and non-complicated wide area interoperable communications system
