IMBE versus VSELP on ASTRO DIU

Post by ASTROMODAT »

Looking through my ASTRO DIU manuals, in ALL cases the ASTRO mode is VSELP, and never IMBE. Does anyone know if the late models of the ASTRO DIU (but prior to the DIU 3000) ever support the P25 CAI IMBE mode, or was the ASTRO DIU always limited to VSELP while in the ASTRO mode?

I believe the only IMBE capable DIU is the DIU3000. If you do run into an desktop DIU that does IMBE, it is probably a development version.

Xmo or Xdc, I think most, if not all, of the boards in the older ASTRO DIU are the EXACT SAME as in the current DIU 3000. For example, the 9.6 kb/s ASTRO modem is the same part number in both units. Therefore, couldn't I convert to IMBE Operational in a VSELP ASTRO DIU with an appropriate code plug change, or some other fairly straight forward parts and/or software upgrade approach?

Again, just trying to avoid having to lay out $10k for a DIU 3000.

However, if VSELP is the only ASTRO digital voice mode possible on an ASTRO DIU, I wouldn't pay 5 dollars for a perfect/NIB unit (it would obviously be worthless in a P25 system), and I would at least not feel quite so bad about shelling out the big bucks for a new DIU 3000.

The DIU 3000 is really just a rack mounted DIU. So I don't see why you can't do this. I'll make a few inquiries.
