ASTRO Minitor V

Post by ASTROMODAT »

Does anyone know if Motorola has plans to introduce a P25 monitor, such as a ASTRO Minitor V, so P25 IMBE dispatches, and other clear digital voice traffic, could be monitored?

That brings up another good question, are they going to support something similar to QCII for P25 so VFD can use the system???

This also brings up another issue: Will they come up with a Minitor V that not only handles ASTRO digital voice, but what about an ASTRO Trunking monitor (not a big 'ol Bearcat handheld, but a small Minitor V). And, what about DES-OFB? Lots of issues. Probably too small of a market, though.

This brings up YET another issue. The ANOLOG Minitor II and IV don't work right yet. I think they should make those work before they go even crazier.

Matt, do you mean 2 and 4 or 3 and 4? I thought the 3 had all the problems....

As for an Astro Minitor, I don't see it. 99% of the minitors are being used on primary dispatch/alert channels and would remain analog. Most of the people using them are in a volunteer capacity and they wouldn't have the cash anyways.

There are many depts that are operating on VHF-Hi/UHF but are still being toned out on VHF-Lo. Hell, there are many county communication systems that are still operating on VHF-Lo simplex.

Astro TAC - Total Area Coverage.

It's used at remote, voted, receiver sites for a repeater system.

The "Minitor V"

Post by Jay911 »

Sorry for the late response...

I was at a fire chief's conference in Calgary in the summer of last year and one of the things mentioned by the Motorola guys doing a communications seminar was that the next generation Minitor will likely have voice storage in all models, an LCD, and will introduce an 800mhz trunking version.

This might be all smoke, but that's what we were told right near the end of the presentation. :)

What'd be NICE for people living in ASTRO areas would be an ASTRO Minitor that does conventional digital squelch - that way, you don't have to go through the expense of an XTS if you just want to listen.

Years back... (mid 90's) they tried making a combination Voice and Display pager... the closest they got was the Tenor (digital voice only.) This was based on the Flex protocol. The Tenor was a short lived product....

Maybe they'll re-think it.
