MTX8000 Continous Rotary

Post by John »

Does anyone know how to enable Continuous Rotary for the channel/mode switch on a MTX-8000/838 (B7 model)? I tried creating a new codeplug in Lab with Continous Rotary enabled but it still doesn't seem to work when I dump it into the radio. Any ideas? The radio does not have a physical stop on the knob but when you go past 16 it resets to mode 1 on the display.

The only radio that the continuous rotary will work on is a top display (b4) model MTSX/MT series. If you want to get the most out of your b7 you have to use the keypad for channel change and zone change via rss, disabling the channel knob completely.

I have done this with my UHF b7 and, after getting used to it, I don't mind it at all.

Hope that helps, and if anyone feels the need to correct me on the above, by all means, giver.

A B7 WILL do continuous rotary, but it wouldn't be a good idea.

I'd do what the above post suggests.

I think you need LAB rss to enable the continuous rotary.

I do have the Zone and Chan functions on the menu and they do allow me to access the extra modes (but I didn't disable the rotary knob). However, I would still like the continous rotary. It is much easier to just step up or down a mode using it than to go through the menu route.

I haven't seen an option in Lab to implement continuous rotary. I see it as an option for making a new codeplug. However, when I do that it still doesn't work. Am I missing something?

Thanks,

How does one get the channel selector to go past the 16th channel on a B7?

Are you asking about physically going past the stop (i.e. rotating all the way around) or electrically going from 16 to 17? The electrical part is the original question here and I have not received an answer that works.

To make it physically go past the stop requires you to either replace the switch or remove and disassemble it and take out the metal stop. Either way takes some patience since you have to completely disassemble the radio and unsolder the switch from the flex.

Physically stopping it... Thought there may have been an easier way then taking apart the radio, desoldering the channel selector and taking off the metal stop... hmmm...

The physical stop is incorporated into the switch itself. It is a small metal disc/washer type affair around the switch shaft with a arm that hits a stop post. If you desolder the switch from the flex, you can pry the actual binary switch loose from the shaft assy and then remove the metal piece. Takes some work and patience like I said but I have never broken one (yet!).

I supposed if you manhandled it enough and really cranked on it you may be able to break te piece inside by just turning it hard. Of course, this way you might just twist the shaft...... never tried that.

You can order a replacement switch from Motorola that doesn't have the stop but it took them 5 tries to get the right switch for me (kept substituting). Anyway, you would still have to do all the disassembly work on the radio itself. Might as well save yourself the $15-20 and take one more step and pry the switch apart and remove the stop.

I have done about 10 of these so far.

Codeplug dump seems the best. Depends on the radio me thinks. I tried it on my B7 but it wants to stay the way it was and roll over to mode 1 instead of 17.
