440 Systems Saber Mystery

Post by nickjc »

Hi,

anyone ever notice on the sys saber in conventional mode that the thing just up and stops...I mean it is as if it locked up...

I stripped it down....rebuilt it...had a copy of the old plug dropped in and voila...it works...

this has not happened twice...

Whaddya think???

Thanks

I had System Saber that was intermittent and it turned out to be a faulty Microprocessor Crystal.

It would fail sporadically and heat (hairdryer) would bring it back to life. Component cooler spray would kill it.

Not sure if this is the same with yours but mine would beep a couple times before going dead. The MON squelch button and PTT would also be inop.

I am just thankful it was sporadic and not completely dead as this did allow me to narrow down the temperature sensitive area.

I was about to pull out my hair in the meantime :-?

:D Well it seems to be OK now....it has been running fine for about 5 hrs..

Well what would happen in the beginning the radio when emit a bad key type tone upon changing a channel or on power up...it would work fine but emit those tones as indicated..

then it starts that the MON PTT or any button is inoperable and there is nothing as if it is dead...

Maybe the micro crystal is failing ont his one too...did you replace your and did it cure the problem??

Thanks

Nick

I had a spare x-tal in my Saber junkbox here and yes it fixed it.

Could be my radio suffered a drop or something and therefore made it intermittent. It was one of those "As Is" units from e-bay.

Well I replaced the x-tal with one I had from another UHF main board that was working fine...also changed out the 16.8 xtal...the one in there was a 5ppm this one happened to be a 2ppm....the radio has been running all night and so far all day and appears to be fine....

time will tell.....
