Adding a Earphone Jack to a NMN6128C For Astro Saber

I have a NMN6128C Portable speakermic, and have attempted to add a Closed circuit 1/8 in. Earphone plug. With the earphone disconnected, the speakermic works, but when I plug the earphone in, the radio defaults to audio from the radio speaker. If I partially plug in the earphone, I can hear audio from both the speakermic and earphone, but cant get it to work on only the earphone. Any Ideas?
