CPS programming help needed for setting up trunking

Post by GaryM »

I've searched all the old posts that looked promising but no help. I have CPS R02 and spme Astro Spectra W7's with APCO-25.

I can program them for Conventional but even with a System Key I can not figure out what I am missing to make them work in a trunking setup to scan or select Talkgroups.

Anyone have any sample .cps files or screen shots on what I need to make sure is setup correctly in CPS?

The software is brand new but it only came with the RSS manual.

What are the Flashcodes for these radios. If these are the radios which have been sold on Ebay (I think they were original sold to Transcrypt) they were conventional only.

I don't have the codes handy but they translate to SmartNet and APCO25 digital options.

These were bought directly from Motorola.

Does the CPS load the system keys. It will say at the bottom left hand side of the CPS window if the system keys were loaded successfully. If not, check the path for your directory where the system key is residing. Or you can check if they are there by looking under the Tools menu for the system keys report.

Yes it loads the keys and I also can get to the settings I couldn't before I loaded the key.

I think my problem is I am not setting something right in the tree, or missing a setting. CPS seems a bit convoluted!

I'm just trying to program it to so I can monitor some talkgroups.

OK, Got the Spectra working in the Trunk mode. Don't know what was up before.

Now my next step is to get it to work with a RIM-II in the RF Modem mode.

There really isn't much to it, if you've done it before in DOS, then you should at least know the minimum information required to program it in CPS, even if you don't know exactly where to put it. I'm going to assume it's a single site SmartNet system for simplicity's sake.

First, under "Trunking System", in the "general" tab create the system with the correct System ID. Choose "disabled" for "coverage type". For monitoring purposes, neither the connect tone, nor the individual ID are important. Make sure to set "auto affiliation" in the "Type II/IIi" tab to "on PTT". Now go to the "700/800 Control Channels" and enter in your valid control channel frequencies (up to 4). This pretty much completes a basic system.

Next, go to "Trunking Personality". In the "general" tab, set your protocol type (probably II). Your system ID should be defaulted to what you set in the "trunking system" screens. Go to the "talkgroup" tab and enter in all talkgroups you wish to listen to, in valid 3-digit Hex values. You can enter up to 15 talkgroups per personality, so if more are required, duplicate as many personalities as you need to accomodate the talkgroups.

Lastly, go to your "Zone/Channel Assignment" and map your talkgroups to the desired channel selector positions/menu items/toggle switch - however you set it up in the "radio configuration - controls - buttons/switches/menu" screens. That should do it.
