Spectra Rx Preamp question

Post by Pj »

How much more of a Rx performance should I expect with the optional Rx preamp for the Spectras? I have both a UHF and VHF in the truck right now. I do get some intermod from paging xmitters on the VHF on the 160-162 range. Would a preamp take care of this problem or increase it? The preamps are still going for the $125 range new from M (haven't checked in a couple of weeks so the price could be off).

Is it worth the investment?

The "pre amp" RF deck will improve the receiver sensitivity about 4 to 6 db, BUT will decrease the rejection of things like the frendly paging transmitter, incresing receiver generated mixes and intermod. It's a trade off.
If you are in a heavy RF inviorment like NYC or LA the preamp may be a poor choice.

I have the 438-470 preamp in my 450-482 S[ectra. Works well except in high RF areas. I can live with the intermod in those areas for the increased sensitivity in the ham band.
