Astro RSS Question?

Post by Astro25 »

I am new to programing so excuse my question, but what is the best processor and Operating system to use when programing with RSS version R09.05.00. Would I be able to use a Pentium 1 running Windows 95 or would that damage something?

Thanks!

P1 will work fine. Just make a dos boot disk and boot into dos before programming.

Yes, newer RSS such as the Astro/MTSX/LCS are written to be much more tolerant of higher processor speeds than the stuff written years ago for the older series radios. Many people report no problems with using 800MHz+ computers, but I wouldn't recommend that kind of speed. Besides, once you get above 200MHz, the program really can't run any faster, so you won't notice much of a speed gain. I find my P-120 with 80 Megs of RAM to be excellent for the Astro/MTSX RSS...way faster than my 486/25MHz unit. My 233MHz desktop is even better.
The main thing to be concerned about is to be sure to use a proper DOS mode for the RSS. Restarting the computer in the MS-DOS mode from the shut-down menu, or hitting F8 & choosing 'command prompt only' at start up are not good DOS modes!! The reasons have been gone over many times, so I won't go into details. Be sure to do one of the following:

1 - Set up a seperate DOS-only partition & use a program such as System Commander to choose it upon start-up. Probably the best method, but a little beyond most people's skills to set-up.

2 - Use a DOS 6.22 bootdisk, which can be downloaded from http://www.bootdisk.com. Booting from this floppy disk will work for 95% of the RSS, assuming there isn't some other problem such as hardware or processor speed issues.

3 - Use the "MS-DOS mode for Games with EMS & XMS support" icon located in the 'C:\Windows' directory of any Windows 98 computer. This essentially does the same thing as the boot disk, but seems to work when the bootdisk sometimes doesn't. This is what I use, has worked for thousands of radios.
