2000 S-10 ZR2 install

This is my amateur setup in my 2000 S-10 pickup. I have the IC-706 MkIIG remote mounted under the driver seat. The custom switch console replaced a useless CD rack that GM decided to put in there. The 10 LEDs show voltage for my secondary battery that is isolated when IGN is off (done through an 80 amp relay). The switches are for my Hella lamps, AHL cutout, DRL cutout, backup/work lights, goosneck light, and warning lights for the FD. The speaker seen behind the head of the radio is now gone and I am using the factory dash speaker for the Icom. The antenna setup is a 2M/440 on the fender, 6M mag on the roof (soon to be replaced), and dual HF hamsticks on the rear.

Those are Hella 550's on the Rhino, right? I have a set of those on the rhino pushbar on my Impala. I love those things, although they are a bit big for a car

What are those driving lights on the upper bar? The smaller 450's?

i dont like mounting radio or stuff under the seats watrer can collectr down there and do a nice job. i have stuck bigger motorola maratracs but mounted up on a board with a riser

Explain the DRL cutout thing too me please?! I have a colegue who wants to put wig-wags in his 2000 but can't because of the damn DRL's. I would imagine there is some way around this. I read something about removing a pin on a relay. He wants more firm confirmation on what to do before we go hacking away at anything.

Nice setup. I love that little control panel. Looks an airplance cockpit panel.


I used to have my Icom 2800 RF deck under the seat. Like Kit said, it is vulnerable there. I've since redesigned EVERYTHING and it is up on the back wall. You might want to look into relocating it if possible.

There is great info about the s-10's at http://www.zr2.com. Head over there and just do a search for DRL in the forums. On the earlier models you could just bend a pin on the relay under the hood. On the 2000 and newer (not positive what years are involved) you have to find the relay under the carpet on the driver side and cut a wire. You shouldn't have any trouble finding a post about it. They are also easy to do the 4 high mod to. All you have to do is ground your low beams all the time since they are ground switched. Keep the ground switching in mind with the wig-wags. I have a wig-wag in the hella 550s on the front of mine from when I was an Asst Chief (easier than hacking the factory lights).

Those are 550s on the rhino and i think 530s on the bar. I have the 550s set to activate with my high beams or have all 4 hellas on with the flip of a switch in the "cockpit". I also have floods to the rear as aux backup lights.

How are you doing this? I know that our squads have the two front door speakers used for the Orion, but that is an option package from Chevy and Ford that has the stereo to the rear speakers only.

How are you doing this while still using the speaker(s) for the stereo? Diodes in line or something?

BTW, I looked at the rest of your pics...you got a nice looking truck. No joke, that is the best late model S-series install I've seen. Your "headache rack" is great looking, and it appears to be just as functional. Your custom switch panel rocks!! I'd like to make a similar one for the useless cubby hole in the front of my Impala's center console (same type of switches, etc).

Thank you for the compliments ! ! ! I have re-worked the audio system in the truck. I have a Sony head unit installed and I am using the door speakers as the the front and made a custom box in the back for an 8" sub and 2 6x9's . That leaves the dash speakers free for the taking. You should be able to do something with diodes though. The switch panel was laid out by me and then made by my father-in-law who works in a Kodak R&D lab. I made a couple out of plexy but they just didn't work out right. I enjoy always finding the next mod to do to the truck. I just ordered these new tail lights for it that will allow me to have amber hidaways to the rear to match my front ones. $12 each !

Nice looking mount, but how is it to operate. I had my 706 mounted low on a console but it was a PITA to operate. T0 much looking down for my liking. I ended up moving my to the overhead console, just over the mirror and its easy to see and adjust and still keep an eye on the road.
