Jeep Cherokee 1987 Laredo HELP!

Post by mavericknet »

After an accident I had with it I stripped out the entire interior of my 1987 jeep cherokee laredo (and vacuumed out the 1" of standing water from the floor). Previosly my wiring job for my lightbar and radios were a joke. Fused lead off the battery for the radio, and an unfused (yup, bad idea) 10 ga lead for the lightbar including it's takedown and alley lights. I've pulled all the wiring out, but now I need ideas on how to make this install look good and tolerable for people to sit in the passenger seat. I have one Maxtrac (no remote mount kit) that fits fine. Other than that I need to choose a lighbar control box, and I'd like to leave room to eventually have a siren box (can't have one now I'm not certified. If anyone has any ideas I'd be much abliged, this trucks is really tiny to work in, and there's no way to remove the console due to floor shifter and e-brake. (BTW Pictures would be the best idea giver)

P/S the original install was done real cheap because I did when I first got the truck and had a $25 budget and a donated lightbar and radio (actually I went dumpster jumping).

We had 2 jeeps at an agency I worked for. You can do the install one of 2 ways. Either mounts stuff to the side of the shift hump like we did or get a swivel trunion type bracket off the side and place the equipment directly over the hump itself. That's about the only option you have unless you get remote radios.

I'd opt for an intergrated siren/light control box to save space. Don't hook up the siren speaker if you can't use it yet. I'd go with Federal Signal. I've had bad experience with Code 3 units burning up and such. Whelen is ok.

For DC power get a circuit braker from TST under the hood rated for at least 100amps and then get an inginition switched relay from BOSCH rated at 75amp to ignition control. Use a good high quality fuse panel fed from the ingition switched relay to power everything from it.

Also if you're a volly I'd ditch the light bar unless you really need it. Maybe a couple of strobe or halogen lights in the rear window and something on the dash ir all your need or flashing headlights.

I love my lightbar, wouldn't trade it for anything... But thanks for the tips, I was considering using one of the galls streethunder push button units, I don't need much from my switch panel as I'm now sure I'm going to put power relays for the bar and other lights under my bench seat in the back. I'm definalty going to go with the 100 amp breaker to the fuse panel I'm also going to mount under the rear seat. Right now my Maxtrac was mounted to the side of the shift hump and fit nicely, the switches I had drilled through the place next to the shifter. I now have to find room for a uniden bearcat 560xlt scanner somewhere. Any more ideas, keep 'em coming.

If you are going to use relays...why not get a wildcard switch? It is littler than anything else you will find, and it is motorola.....contact firemedic here on the board I think he has some brand new Maratrac wildcards.

While we are on that subject, I think, and someone from the board can probably confirm, that a Maratrac siren setup can be a standalone, there is another DEK head Tiny as can be and the siren box mounted away from everything else....

Just FYI, I have a remote mount setup for the maxtrac...would help move the clutter out of the way.

I love the idea of volunteers being able to have lightbars...that is not the case here in KS....at least not in this part of the state, it has been a fight tooth and nail to get the county to allow volunteers to have lights and sirens!

Having a lightbar is not the same as being legally allowed to have one, I'm well protected by being well bless by LEO relations (brother and father) That and I'm not stupid with it which is the key to getting away with having to many lights as a volly. The lightbar is green lenses, not red or blue and I'm not going to need the siren box unless I make officer in my volly department. But I might as well plan on it and make this install look as professional as I can. The dek is a good idea I hadn't thought of. I want to put a syntor 9000 in my work van but I don't have the money in the budget for it, and I wouldn't even know where to begin to mount one in the Jeep.

I had a 97 XJ with a Syntor and a scanner mounted over the hump. Looked okay. I have no way to post pics right now, but I can email a couple if you'd like.

I have a Crown Vic now, that an x9000 is going into. I have a light control box and a FS PA300 with a Midland Syntech1 currently. Dumping the Midland for the X9K.
