EBay gives carte blanche to law enforcement

Post by Bugs Bunny »

What is everyone's take on this article.

According to this EBay will furnish to law enforcement any and all information they have about you without the need for a warrant. Just fax them a letter, asking for it. They will also do sting operations. Nice to know what they think of their users privacy.

Figures a Ebay would do this. They've always been a bunch of pansies with their policy statements.

The thing to rememember is most of the changes to online privacy and privacy in general is directed at the terrorist threat. Feds want less time to act upon intel they have gathered instead of sitting around waiting for a federal judge to grant what they need.

Its a legitimate need from the federal LE community if you want to get the job done.

Of course the privacy implications can be broadly intepreted and there for could pose a threat to our rights and civil liberties. The key word is could pose a threat. Unless you have terrorist connections, history, ties etc etc then I doubt any of this type of increased cooperation with law enforcement will pose a problem, BUT like anything these powers can be abused.

Just look at all the stupid files the FBI used to keep on people.

I and others in LE hope the terrorists and such do get scooped up quickly, but I value my privacy just as much as the next person.

Therefor it will be the balance of our rights vs those of the terrorists that I hope protects us.

Ebay has always said they will work with law enforcement. They have no reason not to.

Ebay

Post by Cowthief »

Hello.

Ebays policy was always one of working with law enforcement.
Look what happened to motorola, the lawyers for motorola sent out letters to ebay, ebay not only responded, they sent copies of everything to both the local police and the distant police, with several follow-ups.
Then motorola stated in public that ebay was acting in bad faith.
This backfired on motorola big time, the DA flat out told the legal department of motorola they were acting in an improper manner.
RSS is still being sold on ebay, motorola has to file charges on its own, no help from the police, DA, or ebay.

Just something I heard 2 weeks ago in DC from a trusted high ranking FED.

Motorola investigators are being given US MARSHAL powers along with many other large corporations so they will not take up valuable FED time, they will have full powers of arrest and can detain at will based on collected evidence. They will be able to pursue Warrants fro Federal Judges.

This is getting a little scarry and I have been in LE for a long time.

There is no right to privacy with respect to information that one willingly gives to a third party. Nor, given the consistent statement of EBay's policy, could there be any reasonable expectation of privacy.

Well, I don't have a problem with what eBay is doing. In fact, I'm glad they are doing that. I am not trafficing coccaine and stolen goods so I have nothing to hide.

eBay at it's finest:
Me: "What exactly is a 900Mhz UHF CB?"
Them: "A very nice CB at 900Mhz speed!"

Federal marshal

Post by Cowthief »

Hello.

That would be a neat trick.
There is only one slight prob' with that, this little federal law, called the US bill of rights, and the body of the parent document.
The states can allow things like citizens arrest, but federal police powers are very limited.
Something about a tea party, in Boston, little over 200 years ago.

Same here but the point is you don't go giving out federal police powers like candy.

But, the magic word is terrorism and its going to justify all sorts of things we would never be able to do in a pre 9-11 society.

Oh yeah.

But me personally I'm still waiting for that magic stamp on my arm
or forehead in order to purchase or sell goods on this earth.

It will be real handy.

And that Bill of Rights they got, Hell that thing has been causing
problems for a while now. Its High time someone did something
about it. Kudos to Ebay and Motorola and Whoever else needs
Federal Arresting powers. My hat's off to them.

And all in the name of Anti Terrorism too. Wow. Those Geniuses
really got it all figured out.

No, The Nation has been around for a long time as a well respected print media.

They have good writers and articles and interesting stories a lot of the bigger newspapers and other outlets won't carry.

I've read it once in a blue moon and its interesting if you can put up with the heavy leftist slant.

liberal doesn't even begin to describe their views.
