Changing an XTS 5000 from 800 Mhz -> VHF

Post by n9upc »

Greetings, I have recently had the chance to make a forward progress in my career. This meant moving from one department to another and of course the two departments operate on 2 different systems as well as two different bands.

As of right now I am on Digital 800 Mhz trunked 9600 baud. I am moving to a Digital Conv. (in a year or two Digital trunked) VHF system. I believe 3600 baud now but going to 9600 buad when it go trunked from what I was told.

So I have an XTS 5000 Model II on the 700/800 Mhz band that I need to go to VHF. Now I was under the impression from some Motorola people here locally that I could just swap out the rf boards from 800 Mhz to VHF and bam I would be all set.
But then I was told, "No you may also have to swap out the Vocon board which holds the programming of the flashcode and the brains so the radio knows that it is now VHF in stead of 700/800 Mhz."

So who is right??? Is either one of them right???? I had to shell a lot of doh-ra-me for this radio and I do not want to have to shell out more money for this thing just to get it to VHF.

If it is a lot of money I may just go and see if someone wants to swap it out with me for a VHF or maybe some deal with some XTS 3000/3500 model III or something.

I like the radio and would just hate to see it sink me more into a money pit. Any help, thoughts, or ideals would be great.

You would need to swap both the RF and vocoder boards. They are the only two in the radio (except encryption if you have it) so not worth swapping boards. Best bet is to swap the 700/800 for a VHF (if you can find any).
