New ASTRO Spectra LCD Control Head!

Post by ASTROMODAT »

The new LCD ASTRO control head is supposed to replace the current vacuum fluorescent head (as opposed to being an additional/optional offering). I have seen several detailed JPEGs, and it is AWESOME!

It is supposed to be released with CPS 4.0, as previous RSS/CPS versions will unfortunately be incompatible with this all new head. Also, there are a number of new blow-away features in CPS 4.0 (besides the LCD head support), so it looks like it will be worth waiting for CPS 4.0. Unless CPS 3.0 has a crucial new feature that you specifically need, looks like the best bet is to hold-off for 4.0.

I was asked to not distribute the JPEGs. Sorry.

Me too.

And BTW, why would anyone name a radio after a Honda anyway?

Review?

Well... first we have to make vague posts about products yet to be heard of, and listen how they are overpriced for the normal person.

Once we're past that.... than we'll throw in some stuff to give the impression "I'm the guy who knows all..."

After ALL that rolls around, we'll have to hear about it not coming out until the end of 2093, and only the feds and helicopter agencies have access to it.. or need it. Naturally, justification from fed papers will follow, wasting even more space on the board.

Then MAYBE you'll get a review from someone else who has ACTUALLY used the thing, to give first hand knowledge.

I dunno... just my crystal ball talkin'

Isn't the new XTL5000 mobile going to have an LCD display?

"Isn't the new XTL5000 mobile going to have an LCD display? "
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's sort of what we are talking about. Some day it will have an LCD display.

The new XTL is the replacement for the Astro Spectra. It is available right now - BUT - only with the same heads as the Astro Spectra. And I do mean the SAME heads. When you order the XTL the control head is one line item and the control head software [in the radio] is another line item. You can order the radio from the factory pre-configured for a certain head - without actually buying a head.

Why would you do that? You can actually use the head and cable you already have! They even made the RF 'brick' fit the same mounting bracket. [Somehow this doesn't seem like the Motorola we all know so well - but there it is]

Later - there will be two new radio product lines - both based on the new RF 'brick' but each will have a new type of head - and corresponding mid-tier and high-tier feature sets. One of these product lines has the development name 'Odyssey' [hence the joking reference to Honda]

Motorola does have a time line for the introduction of these products, but they have asked it remain confidential - those who [like TPG] prefer to see hard facts rather than rumours are hereby authorized to forget that they saw this post.

the fcc maintains the web directory (lists) of all equipment submitted for certification.

the xtl5000 does have an entry (some links below)

when the new control head is submitted to the FCC for addition to the XTL's type certification #... the web page should update with the addition.

as expected the external pics right now are with the old VFD.

here are some interesting links to pages on the XTL...(oops a couple of these are for the XTS 5000...sorry... the last two are xtl 5000 mobile pages)

These new radios are awesome in terms of features, and they look awfully KEWL, too! Go Motorola! It's no wonder that Motorola keps beating up the competion: They NEVER rest, and they keep on improving their products.
