NiMh Batteries for Minitor II / III / IV Fire Pagers???

Post by nmfire10 »

I have recently (this week) taken over as the radio equipmet officer in my Volunteer Fire Dept. This means I have the wonderful task of Pager batteries. I don't think there is a more abused battery in the world than that of one of these pagers. Over charging, Under Charging, never gets drained all the way down, etc, etc, etc. It would seem that a NiCad battery is the worst battery you could use for these applications. Funny that is what every new radio and pager comes with. Anyway....

1. Is there a such thing as a NiMh battery for the Minitor II Pagers? They use their own special battery, not a AA or AAA or anything.

2. Will the regular old chargers for these devices work with a NiMh battery? The Minitor III & IV use AAA Batteries which have readily available NiMh versions. I just wonder if the chargers will be compatible. A few extra dollars for the NiMh batteries could save in the long run with toasted NiCads we use now. Not mention it would last longer when a situation arises that prevents it from getting charged sooner.

Any insight on this anyone?

And using the regular charger with the NiMh batteries work ok? I wish the Minitor IV's were more reliable. Having a pager with a battery that lasts for 3 days would be nice.

Pager battery

Hello.

You can only find them in Canada.
The mercury battery has a 5 day life, but not good to overcharge.

I also use the green NiMh batteries from Radio Shack, and normally see 56-64 hours of runtime with them. I try to run them out, but either I'm deaf or they go dead rather quickly.

However, I use the "fancy" $30 8-slot recharger from Radio Shack, NOT the Minitor III charging base. I keep three plastic drinking cups by the charger: charged AA, charged AAA, discharged. Between my Palm IIIxe (AAA, and I usually play about 30 minutes of Spades & Solitaire with the light on every night) and my Minitor III, those AAAs see a lot of action. My Pro-92 and the Sony digital camera use those AAs pretty hard too, at times.

I do keep a set of NiCd batteries in the Minitor III charger for times when I didn't manage to throw enough into the charger in time. Often when I travel, I'll put the Minitor III on the NiCds so I can get all of my NiMhs caught up, and give the NiCds some exercise.

Just my $0.02...

I charge the Green NIMH batteries from radio shack right in the pager with the min 3 charger. I have used them in both 3's and 4's
