System Saber Question
I'm thinking about getting a VHF Systems Saber, model # H43TUN517OCN. I don't have access to the radio right now, but I know it has a 16 mode selector and no keypad. Is there any way of figuring out how many zone there are in this radio without reading the codeplug? Thanks.

Re: System Saber Question
One Zone only 16 Ch. I'm not completely sure if you lose a channel or not by setting a channel to "scan" the other channels in the radio.
This would be for conventional. If you are using the radio for trunked talkgroups, then I don't know because I have not tried
that. It would probably be the same though.
Astro Saber I's give 32 Ch. And they got an A/B concentric
switch around the CH. selector.
And contrary to several popular Ebay Advertisements,
NO, you can not use the secure/clear switch to get another zone.
This trick is for only the Saber IE. Which canNOT scan at all.

I also have my Ch16 position set up for scan and don't see a way to switch the Scan ON or OFF. I tried programming one of the RAT buttons to do this but it does not seem to recognize it. Just gives a boop sound.
The secure/clear (TMSS) on the Systems Saber can be configured as a Talkaround select but I am not sure anything "channel wise" would be gained in doing so.
I have 4 Saber 1E's here and really like them but the Scan on the Systems Saber is a step up the ladder. I miss much less traffic with it but it's a little hard to determine what I am listening to without a display. A display on this model would certainly be helpful.
The AstroSaber 1's sound neat but I guess that takes a smart-rib ?

on getting more than 16 channels from the radio is only by using one of the rat buttons, or the ergo switch , for repeater or local switch..
that is the " trick " to getting 32 channels from a syssaber I
and i havent been able to get the scan to switch with the button method ..
if someone knows how to make it work , i wish they would share

I do not see how this is a trick and you get 32 channles...if you prog 16 the tmss switch or the rat button switches from repeat to TA...how is this now 32 channels..
??
You are till working from a base frequency, it does not allow you to enter any other freqs that I know of...
What I would like to know is how to take a syssaber I to a syssaber III....

Not too hard, I did that before as well as make a UHF SaberIII into a VHF 144-174. It's all in the front controller/keypad shield.
For the Syssaber I to III conversion all you need is the front shield/controller assembly of a systems saber III. just pull off your old one, put on the new one, along with a saber III case (same thing) and reprogram as a syssaber III, and your done. Problem is
that the syssaberIII front shield assembly is hard to get at a resonable price, not to mention 80 Bucks for a new case. (if you can get one for that little)
And remember this too: the original front shield from that syssaber I, is now of very little use, because you CAN'T use it on a regular Saber I and turn it into a Syssaber I. It won't work. Different Mother Boards. Only the internal Modules and Case are the same.
Thats why you can use a regular Saber III case and don't need a Systems Saber case. The only difference in the cases are the labels.
And as far as going from a UHF Saber III to a VHF, you must first start with a known Good Saber I VHF in the Split that you want. Also remember that High Power 144-174 Wide Split sabers DO Exist, But are rare. Simply Swap Cases and Controller Board from the UHF III to the VHF Saber I and reprogram. Do the same to the UHF which will now be a Saber I. This is basically the only way to make a Saber III into a different band entirely i.e. 460-490 to 146-174.
Remember the Front shields/Controller are completely different on a Systems Saber vs. a regular Saber, III's included. So you canNOT
make a Systems Saber III out of a Saber III. Because the Mother boards are different.
The Procedure for converting a Saber I to a III is on the regular Batlabs site.

thats just it .. there is no trick .. when people advertise the radio and say " you can get more channels if you know how to program the radio , or hack it "
they are full of crap . so if you have 16 repeated channels and you program a button for local or non repeated you have 16+16= 32 ??? right ??? ( and this is for a syssaber I ) ...

16 channels..
Ahh I misread your post...tounge in cheek...no way you can think that 16 channels of talk around is another full fledged 16 channels..!williamh wrote:

Yes Sys saber I...also I find the scan on the radio, while nice, to be lacking..would benice to configure one of the rat buttons as a nuisance delete....
