I just activated some DES-XL encryption modules in my Astro Sabers and it has really scratchy audio. Is that normal for encryption or is something wrong. Thank you.

I use DVP-XL in Astro Sabers, Sabers, Spectras and Syntor X9000's. They all have "scratchy" securenet operation.

So it sounds like poor audio with a lot of static background?

It sounds like there is squelch noise or something similar in the background, usually only when there is some type of modulation.

In fact sometimes it can be so bad it is hard to understand the person talking, but this is rare.

What radios do you own?: X9000 thru APX

Try them simplex as well as thru the proper repeater. We recently moved our antenna's ontop of a 250 ft cell tower, and the DVP comes in much, much better than before. DVP/DES is very picky on the RF conditions.

I have also been told that DVP is much clearer than DVP-XL and the same for DES. This has something to do with the XL encryption having a longer transmission range.

As far as I know, that is correct. An agency that I worked for had DVP for awhile, but suffered incrediable range problems. When they switched to the -XL, range was as good as clear, but it was a bit more muffled. When using XL, I guess you need a really good repeater and/or voter system in place.

How is the saber? Did it do the trick?

I have a couple of questions that maybe somone here can answer please: 1) I need to add DES-XL to my VHF Spectra 100 WATT, is that add on board the same as with the smaller watt unit, or different?
2) I would like a VHF portable Astro VHF Saber w/dual DES/DVP, or Saber III, can anyone help?

Thank you!

Yes the secure board is the same (HLN6000B) and des-xl is TRN7036A.
