MT1000 with bad fuse

I have a MT1000 UHF that looks like the fuse on the battery plate is bad. What can cause this?

This radio belongs to a friend of mine, and I know he has a habit of taking the battery off and sliding on a different one with the radio turned ON. Could this be the cause of the bad fuse? I only have one other fuse and it's on another radio that im using, so I don't want to take it out of service to try and repair his. This is the first time I have seen a blown fuse and I have had several radios in this series.
