CPS 2.01 Requires New SRIB

Post by ASTROMODAT »

Found out today from Motorola RSS Support that the CPS 2.01 requires the next generation SRIB. RLN-1015 will supposedly no longer support programming, nor FLASHport upgrades, with the latest and greatest CPS version 2.01 with the latest ASTRO P & M firmware.

(r0f, I asked the RSS Motorola fellow if this CPS Version 2.01 has your 20 issue, and he thinks it might, but he didn't know for sure.)

OK -

So what are you saying?

In order to program the radio your going to need a $549 part as opposed to the older flashrib, or rib?

Or we just talking the new tier radios that are now coming out?

Your post is really confusing IMHO. I don't get where your going.

They said that if I send my ASTRO P & M radios into the Service Depot in the next several weeks (might be able to get away with it today or tomorrow, but like Bush keeps saying: "Time is running out...") to FLASH IMBE and uplift to the current firmware (as is "automatically" done with all Depot serviced radios) , then I should understand that for any further programming and/or FLASHporting by me via CPS 2.01, I will need a new SRIB as my current SRIB (RLN-1015C) will no longer be compatible. He said I would need the RLN-1015D, which he claimed was released about Nov, 2002. Yes, it's about $550 or so.

I complained that this is a bit of bad news, but his response was that the SRIB "lasted" for almost 10 years so I shouldn't complain.

The price of progress, I guess...

Or is it that Motorola Marketing Genius at work again?! Got to admit: I'd sure like to hire him!

This doesn't make any sense. What features does the new SRIB give you? I know it has a bigger 2MB FLASH as opposed to 1MB FLASH on the older rib, but this is not needed for programming a radio. Also any idea when the upgrade to CPS will be shipping? I wonder when Motorola will start requiring a dongle to use CPS, or have you authenticate your copy (like WINDOZE XP).

Motorola have not advised any of us MSS's about the need for the "D" version SmartRib for programming any upcoming new factory radios, either via SRN or Motorola On-line. The fact it's required for FLASHporting certain models is already known, but I believe there must be a misunderstanding about regular programming.

In the past you could do "regular programming" with either a RIB or an SRIB, but flashing required the SRIB.

I think all he is saying is that the old SRIB won't work anymore - for either "regular programming" or for flashing. Nothing was said about a RIB not working for "regular programming".

Still sucks.

He said the new RLN-1015D is necessary for the RSS to talk to it in the FLASH mode. The earlier versions (RLN-1015C and earlier) will no longer toggle into FLASH mode via RSS commands (for at least some Motorola radios) once you go to the CPS 2.01 (whose release is supposedly iminent). The backdrop of our conversation was FLASHport upgrades.

His point was that my RLN-1015C is soon to be a boat anchor since it is not possible to upgrade it to a D model.

He also explained that each time you do the latest FLASHport to any particular radio, as part of the normal FLASHport process, the SRIB is ALSO "automatically" upgraded to the latest/current SRIB firmware, assuming you have the latest/current FLASHport for the particular radio you are uplifting. However, in the case of the D model, it requires an all new hardware unit, and can't be uplifted from the C to D model via FLASH.

This was the point in our conversation where he said I should be glad that my SRIB lasted 10 years, etc. I got the old "Micors that lasted forever days are over" lecture.

Larry.
