CPS crashes on Win2K - anyone else having this problem

First, no ragging on me for using CPS now on a few of my AS3's. I thought LONG and hard (8 months)about switching to CPS from RSS.

OK finally got around to installing CPS 1.04.00, and it reads and programs the AS3 fine (well at least 2 radios so far), but everytime I either close out of the current codeplug or close the program, the CPS crashes

Anyone else having this problem on their system, and how to fix it. Is this a known bug in the CPS on win2K?

My system:
P3 700Mhz Intel processor
OS: Win2K professional

I don't have any CPS past 1.04.00, as my subscription ran out last year I guess. Hey at least the fine folks at /\/\otorola kept sending me updates for years and years before it stopped comming mid last year.

Again, please no ragging me about CPS, as both RSS and CPS has its advantages. I like both

Not really a known "bug", but known to happen sometimes. Do you have at least 128MB of RAM? It's important to have at least that much if running CPS in Windows2000. Going through the readme on the CD, I came across this...it's not really for your described problem, but it may help:

On Windows 2000:
1. Right click 'My computer' and select 'Manage' from context
menu.
2. Select 'Device Manager' on the tree in the left pane.
3. Expand the node 'Ports' on the tree in the right pane.
4. Double click the port that is being used
5. Go to 'Port Settings' Tab
6. Click 'Advanced'
7. Uncheck 'Use FIFO buffers' check box.
8. OK

Also, have you upgraded to at least Service Pack 2? Many programs require it, even if it isn't specifically mentioned. The latest is Service Pack 3, available from the Windows Update site.
Otherwise, a good scandisk/defrag and registry checker program can sometimes do wonders. Good luck,

I've got 256megs RAM, and sp1 only installed. Will try soon to get the latest updates for win2K (i'm on dialup

).

I am however, running Win2K on drive D. Wonder if this could cause a problem? The Win2K install is fresh install with only a few other programs installed.

But in the mean time, I will try the settings below and see what that does.

I don't think the drive it's installed on will cause an issue. The operating system uses variable based paths, so installing it on a different drive won't cause issues.

You might also want to try removing and reinstalling the CPS. Sometimes that cures most of the problems that crop up. CPS could also be expecting a C: path to find it's DLL files, but I can't say for sure. My guess is upgrade to SP2, and follow what Todd has mentioned here.

Has it been confirmed that the trick really works? I know it allows the 32 control channels to remain in there in AMSS mode, but is the radio actually able to utilize control channels above the first 8? I've never tried it. I suppose a way to find out would be to fill the first 8 with invalid frequencies, then put a valid frequency into slot 9 & see if the radio will pickup the site.

Yup it does from my limited testing of it. If you set up one of the buttons for site display, you will see which site you are receiving. The site numbers are incorrect as the site displayed is where the control channel resides in the list. ie Site 1 will be the first CC, while Site 32 would be the last CC.

Thanks for all the information. Tryed everything you all suggested, but it still crashes when trying to close out of a codeplug or close the CPS.

I get a bit scared programming with the CPS, seeing as it crashes. At least I don't have to program a ton of radios, but just small tweeks now and again

I guess the next step is to try a different OS.

Just hope you don't crash while burning a FLASHport! Then you will really be screwed.

CPS doesn't work with Windows 2000, switching to ME or W98, etc. ain't going to help.

Your best bet: Go back to bulletproof DOS!

Unfortunately, not an option for XTS 2500/5000, and soon not to be for future MTS/MCS radios, as well as possibly Astro. Also not an option for MTR2000, MCT3600, and likely any other future programmable product from Motorola.
So, people might as well try to learn the new-fangled Windows stuff, as it isn't going away. Thousands of people are running CPS on various platforms without any problems...including the Depot. In reality, the CPS works on a much wider variety of hardware & (obviously) OS platforms than the DOS RSS ever could.

Actually, in Hightower's case, it might. He's using an earlier version of CPS (1.04.00), and while I checked the readme for that version and it claims Win2k compatibility...who knows? Best bet might be to try the latest & greatest (I know, more money!), version 2.00.00 (I think). Or go back to Win98SE if need be (I don't recommend WinME).

Version R01.02.00 was supporting Windows XP, and working quite well under it. Given how close win2k is to XP, I'm sure that isn't the problem, but I guess you never know...
