I have a MTS2000 that I beleive is smartnet, in the control channel selection area there is space to enter 4 control channels.

After I enter the primary control channel, can I add the primary control channels for the simulcast sites on the same system in the other 3 spots or will it only work for 1 site?

If not, what is the purpose of entering 4 channels instead of just the primary?

In a traditional Motorola trunking system, the first 4 channels in the system share the control channel duties, switching from one to another every 24 hours. Thus the need to have 4 control channels in the radio, it has to know which 4 frequencies to scan in order to lock onto the current control channel.
With the advent of continuous-duty capable repeaters, many of today's systems have strayed from this configuration, so there may only be a need for one control channel in the radio. The corresponding channel frequencies in all sites in a Simulcast system are identical, so you may indeed only need the single control channel frequency programmed into the radio.
