Fail 01/84 - SLIC Initalization Failure - Doesn't sound good.

Looking at the service book, could be a few different IC's. Basic things to look for:

1 Missing + or - to the SLIC
2 Open in the parallel address bus, data bus or associated sectle lines between the host and SLIC
3 4xECLK missing to the SLIC
4 SLIC is bad

Good luck!

No I did not force anything into this Astro. It's my agency Astro that sometime when replacing the battery the LCD would go blank and the green LED would just stay on. When I tried to reset the radio by removing the battery and waiting a few seconds I got a faint Fail 01-84 on the display.

It is possable that the internal "flex" ribbon that connects the radio to the contacts on the outside of the case has gotten mis-aligned or has shifted.

This "flex" cable can get mis-aligned if you tighted the positive (+) contact on the botton of the AS3.

If you want, open the AS3 by removing the two "spanner" type screws on the bottom of radio AND positive gold contact . You can pull the flex cable up (carefully) and inspect it for corrosion or anyting odd. Also pay attention to the "contact marks" left by the radios springs pressing on the flex - make sure these look as to align up properly. Also look at the positive (+) threads on the flex and make sure it has not been tighten up with too much torque - this causes the threads to partly break free from the flex causing it to be misaligned when the radio is put back together.

When this happened to my AS3, the radio would power up with the top LED lite and no front display. The Flex is part of the case :o , so I just ordered a new case and never had a problem again :D I suspect this might be the problem wth your AS3 ScannerDan.

Best of luck ScannerDan

PS let us know if/how you get your AS3 working properly - thanks
