OEM Car Decals

Ive heard that the "decals" OEMs put on their cars saying the model, etc of the car (at least on GMs) are applied with a glue that reacts with heat - AKA apply heat and the decal will come off. I like that look and would like to remove them - anyone ever done it? Willa regular heat gun work or??? Dont want to damage the paint! Thanks

You have to be careful using a heat gun. You just wave the heat gun back and forth until the decal 'bubbles' up. Then it will peel off...

We used some decal remover to remove all of the decals from several ambulances here. It worked much better than the heat gun because if you didn't heat the decal up enough, then it will take the paint with it when you go to pull it off...

I guess I used the wrong term -Im talking about the thing on the back of cars that has the Chevy logo, says TAHOE, etc. Maybe a plcard would be a better term - like a half an inch thick piece of plastic. Hopefully that explains it. Thanks

Thos tend to be bolted or pop riveted from the inside of the body.

It's gonna leave a small hole or 2 after you take it off.

I haven't seen an emblem bolt on for quite some time. I don't even see the ones with locating pins anymore.

They're held on with double-sided tape. Pull gently and it should come off with some coaxing love. You can try to pre-heat the area of the sheetmetal with a heat gun before trying to remove.
Clean up residue with "Goo-Gone" or starting fluid.

If it's not a brand new vehicle, after cleaning residue off, go over the area with 2000 type compound then wax.

yep, they're right. I used to work for a Chevy dealership, all it is is double sided foam tape (My computer is a Chevy Caprice). You can even buy replacement ones through the dealership.
