In Vehicle GPS

Post by Code3Response »

Howdy guys. I would like a dash mount GPS to mount in my vehicle when the laptop with on screen mapping isnt in. The GPS will be using an external antenna mounted on the roof. I would like standard GPS features (lat, lon, elevation, speed, etc) along with some sort of mapping system. I am thinking along the lines of a GPSIII - I know it had these features. They have been out for several years however, and Im sure there is something better. What do you guys use or recommend? Thanks!

I've got a StreetPilot (the origional color one) and it's quite nice. $300 @ dayton.

Still, finding the software is a pain in the arse. I really don't want to pay out the "you know what" to buy it from garmin.

Sadly, my source locally can't order it through ingram.

I'm using the Garmin Colormap "The original one" I've had no trouble getting ram modules, accessories, etc for it and at reasonable prices. It would be nice however if they would update the base map.

Check out http://groups.msn.com/thibodeauphotos for my install

I have a garmin 3plus, is there a source other than garmin to obtain the street map level software? I would like to put the denver area on mine. That is all I would need is just the denver and colorado springs area of colorado.

Anybody have any sources or suggestions other than the garmin CD's.

Thanks,

Dave

I have the III+ myself, and I shelled out $100 for my Mapsouce CD a few years ago. Still is pretty current, and what's nice is that Garmin frequency will keep up firmware and software updates....for free.
