well, i am going to send monty the programming cable schematic.
to say that for $225 you get a "good programming cable" would an understatement.
u get a POS USB connector, a DB25 male plug (to go into the new portable test box) and a jedi mic connector - i'll take the db 25 apart, but there can't be that much in there - maybe a usb chip for comms... simple.
and
GET THIS
" THE USB PROGRAMMING CABLE IS ONLY SUPPORTED IN WINDOWS 2000 and WINDOWS ME"
what the hell is up with that??????????????????
Gee, i get it, we'll support two out of date (and one TOTAL POS - ME) operating systems!!!!!!!!!!!!
so needless to say, my brand spanking new $225 cable will not read an XTS 5000 in winXP
anyone have a workaround?
on another note - the initial review of this "watchbuddy" xts 5000 reveals.... that he doesn't know how the gasket is supposed to fit in the radio. both sides of the chassis notch were pinching the o-ring out past the chassis .... i.e. "it was installed by an idiot"... oh well..easy enuf to fix.... oh, and the ebay ad clearly stated "please pick your color"...my buddy stated in his emails to nick that he wanted a black one... and guess what showed up?
yellow.

Hmm, the information for CPS 3.0 still stipulates USB is only supported for Windows ME & Windows 2000 SP2 or higher. If it works for you in XP, you are lucky. I don't see why Motorola won't incorporate it for XP, it's basically Windows 2000 underneath. It definitely won't work in '98, I've tried several different computers.
I don't believe the USB cable has any electronics in it, all the comms hardware is in the radios themselves. We purchased both cables (USB & serial ribless) so we could use any Windows platform for programming. To be fair to Motorola, they developed the USB cable on those two O/S platforms because they were the latest pushed by Microsoft at the time. Doesn't mean they couldn't work towards more compatibility though.
Before you find out later, the USB also cannot be used for FLASHport upgrades!! You might as well get the serial one beforehand.

Welcome to the /\/\achine.
Read the readme.txt file in CPS 3.0.
USB is supported in XP SP1 now. ALso USB flashes are supported using CPS 3.0
I've flashed several XTS5000's using the USB cable both under Win2k SP4 and XP Sp1.
Here's a snippet from that readme.

CPS Enhancements:
=================
- The Customer Programming Software (CPS) now supports USB programming on
the Windows XP Home and Professional operating systems, SP 1 or higher.
- FLASHport upgrades via USB are now supported on Windows 2000 SP 2 or
higher and Windows XP SP 1 or higher. When USB FLASHport is performed for
the first time on a particular computer, an XTS Motorola FLASHzap device
is installed on the machine twice, once when a radio is connected to the
computer with a USB cable and turned on, and again when the radio enters
a state called "bootmode" during FLASHport upgrade. For Windows 2000,
this installation is automatic. For Windows XP, the operating system will
display a pop-up which requires user intervention. It is recommended that
you keep the default setting which allows an automatic installation. If
you choose to cancel the installation of the FLASHzap device or choose a
manual installation and cannot complete it, then USB FLASHport will be
aborted because these devices are needed for a successful FLASHport
operation to occur.

Cool....I stand corrected on that. To be honest, I hadn't read the readme file yet, only the Service Brief on paper which accompanied the CPS 3.0 CD (SBSY-9505-G). It still had the Windows ME/2000 limitation for USB, as well as the FLASHport limitation. It pays to check the readme file! With improvements like that, I really can't call version 3.0 "crap", as r0f referred to it as.
....Oh right, he was referring to the Astro Saber/XTS CPS...too many CPS disks now...
