jedi vehicle charger

Post by 2wayguy »

I have a jedi mobile charger in a crown vic. Everytime you start the car, the charger goes from trickle to rapid charge. It is cooking the heck out of the battery. It has been rewired numerous different ways to try and fix it with no luck. Any constructive ideas?

I have a Jedi MTVA in my Crown Vic and experienced the same thing as you. I installed a switch on the MTVA that would make it trickle-charge only, or operate normally. I had been noticing the rapid charger would engage every time I'd put the radio in the cradle, and the battery was getting rather warm for my liking. That's when I got the idea to install a small switch to allow normal charging or trickle charging only. Now I just leave it in the trickle charge position and it works great.

I'm going to get kicked for saying this...

... But perhaps the force is not strong with your charger.

Oh man, I didn't see this topic again until just now! Sorry about the long delay but I totally forgot about this one!

Basically what I did was use the existing Pac/RT switch on the top of the MTVA, and isolated the switch from the main circuitry (I cut the traces). I located the charging circuit section on the board and soldered some jumpers to connect the rapid-charging circuit to one side of the switch, and jumpered the other position of the switch so it would trickle-charge when placed in that position. Once I located the appropriate circuitry on the main board it was just a matter of soldering the jumpers from the switch to the correct spots on the circuit board. It took some doing but it works nicely. One position only trickle-charges, and the other postion rapid-charges, then goes to trickle once charged (normal operation). Like I said before, I just leave the switch in the trickle-charge position since I hated the MTVA going to rapid-charge every time I'd drop my HT1000 in there. Trickle-charge is the way to go for me!

Again, sorry for the late reply!!

I Never asked, tried to sell, or even so much as hinted about RSS. The moderators decided to "tag" me for no reason. This is what happens when you ask for help on the board. Your name gets smeared for something you didn't do.

Don't suppose you'd care to document the jumper installs, would ya?
