I am torn between the spectra and the syntor x system 9000. What are the actual operational diferences? I ahve reviewed the literature on batlabs, but want to know what I will see in terms of operation. Looking at VHF high operation.

The X9000 acts quite a bit like a Spectra operation wise. It was the spectra, before the spectra... 
Most X9000's are 100 watt radios (a few low power and some 110 watts are kicking around) while spectra's were made from 15 to 110 watts.
MDC, DTMF etc is all standard on a spectra, X9000 requires add in cards.
X9000's are built extremely well, and are tough to kill and corupt. Spectra's are a bit more tempermental. All Syntor radio drawers require a bit of real estate in your vehicle where as the spectra is a quite small, except for the highpower models.
I had three x9000's at one time, and I loved them. I just wanted something smaller. One thing to consider with the x9000 (and even the spectra) is that they are no longer in production, and at least with the x9000, all support is canceled. Whatever M has left in inventory is all what there is. Once the parts are gone, thats it. Spectra's are still within the support cycle.
Also with the x9000 (as with any high power radio) is that they suck a few amps when xmitting, which may be a problem with some newer vehicles and their electrical systems...especially if you have lots of lights and other accesories running.
Overall, the x9000 still is a great radio and hard to kill.

The UHF X9000 have narrower band spreads then the Spectra, I have about 6 of each, I used to have 2 x9000 in the car to cover both UHF bands. I now have 1 Astro Spectra, to cover the whole range. While the conventional Spectra covers 448-482, the X9000 is broken down into 2 ranges 450-470, 470-482. The X9000 has some nifty add on boards, that the Spectra does not. Namely for my use the 16key Advanced Securenet board. The Spectra only has a single key Advance Securenet board or an internal 2 key board, using 2 hybrids.
