GOT A XTS3500 UHF (HELP PROGRAMMING)
Moderator: Queue Moderator
I ordered a XTS3500 to replace the Saber that was stolen, last article. Can anyone tell me any thing special that I might need to know about this radio's programming quirks? Anything that I could do that could make it a doorstop??
Anything that can be done to make it work better than out of the box?? It is 450-512 split
PS I also am selling a MTS2000 UHF 450-512 full front, 255 ch, with 3 ragular and 1 new large battery, rapid or standard charger, anyone interested make offer.
Thanks

Just make sure you have the right software and beware that unless it's FLASHED by sources other than Motorola it will not do trunking. (I have seen a real XTS-3500 do trunking)The correct RSS is RVN 4170, the standard Astro Software doesn't work, including the new CPS. Programming is very straight forward no surprises or quirks. You could debate which is the better radio all day long, but the backlighting is nicer than the Saber and most of your MT-2000 accessories will work. If you want a drop in no-frills cheap mobile charger the Motorola TDN9816 for the Jedi series works great, just remove the spacer plate. It's advertised for Nicads but we have been using the high capacity NiMH batteries for over a year with no problems, I have been told not to use the Lithium Ion batteries in it because it will overcharge them. Good luck but one question, how come you didn't go with an XTS-3000?

Current XTS 3500 RSS is RVN4170D Version R02.00.03 dated 27 October 01. Runs much faster than the DOS Astro RSS.
The RSS band limits are ASCII digits so you can easily extend the band limits using the same method as with the DOS version of Astro.
If you are using IMBE you can turn 'transmit audio scaling' which improves the average digital 'talk power'. It is a sort of AGC system that gives more consistent IMBE TX audio. This great feature really works well.
By the way the standard VHF/UHF band limits are actually 136-178, 380-470, and 450-520 MHz.

Did you order the ruggedized option? I've seen these radios dropped off 3rd floor roofs and land on black top and still work. I've dropped mine in several puddles on the fire scene, the audio sounded funky until it dryed out but worked great after that. I think it was a fairly cheap option and in my opinion worth every penny!

Oh yeahh, I remmeber, I heard from somebody when you buy an XTS3500, many of the option are included in the radio when your buy it, like Digitial, so no more worry about trying to get it flashed, hehehe, Beside, motorola people are pretty nice, if your clueless, like i was years ago, u can buy alot of things from them lol.

Stan,
The XTS3500 and most of the Astro, can decode MDC if am right, its standard now, it should be in the RSS, am not really to sure where it is, but its in there I promise you. Like my mt2000, I though it would decode, until I found out it dont work, its usually in the CALLER ID part, or CALL List. And somwwhere in there, it should let you pick either just Decodeing the number, or Decoding from Call List. Also just to let you know, I hear that people say that, when you decode MDC, its harder to decode it, if they have the MDC as trailing at the end, then when they key up, you can get it easier.
As for the Inter mod in that ht, simplest way to take stop it, is to, just put PL on, and its quiet, hehehe. Its almost like my Kenwood TK-805D that recieve intermod, I just put PL on and its gone.
Hope that helps alittle, just know only few things
