Question; I have a Sabewr III that has a low audio, at least that what some have said. Is there an adjustment (not talking louder;-)). Or do I send it in for service. How far from the radio should I speak from while trans?

In Sabers, there are " Soft Pot " Values that
Control the Audio Response.
If youy do not have the Manuel or Programming
Hardware, you would be ahead of the game by
finding someone local ( Or there are many on the
Forum here ( Including me ) that can " Realighn"
your Saber properly.
To answer your question.....2 ~ 3 Inches away from
the Speaker Grill is appropriate.

There is a mic gain adjustment in addition to the deviation setting in the CORE 6D version if you by chance have that version. There you can select -3dB, 0dB, +3dB and 6dB of Microphone Gain. Not too sure what is the most common setting but the default is 0 dB according to the Saber User Guide.
As Monty said these are soft pot adjustments [in the RSS] that require the necessary alignment equipment and expertise.
Also from experience I can say there is a decal on the face speaker shield that surrounds the Mic opening. Due to the adhesive getting soft the decal can slide over the MIC opening and can partially or completely block the opening. Easy to spot once you have the Saber opened up. Seems the better quality tape (orange-amber color type) used on the older models did not do this. I believe the functions as an accoustical seal against the radio housing. A similar tape could be used here to replace it.
Last but not least some of the submersible Sabers I have come across recently have had the membrane completely deteriorated [due to age the best that I can tell.] This latex debris could be covering the mic opening as well but it probably would still pass audio to the mic somewhat OK since that is what it is designed to do.
As for that fix some here have taken apart the front speaker grill to access the membrane and replaced it with a similar material.
My problems with the deteriorated membrane seem to be in the rx audio output and vibration at certain frequencies or volume levels.
