XTS-3000 Upgrade???
Heard a rumor from a county radio tech that Motorola was going to upgrade the XTS-3000 in the near future to be 700/800 Dual Band capable. Has anyone on the board heard anything along these lines?
...
actually that's contrary to what i have heard...
in that the xts is nearing end of life (it's almost 10 years old now) and is going to go away early 2005.
however, i would add that this decision could be affected by the now impending release of the 700 mhz band by the TV broadcasters...the earlier the band is released to PS, the more likely that a retrofitted RF board could (perhaps) be offered.
i know M is pushing VERY VERY hard to get the broadcasters off their assignments in the 700mhz band especially in a few key cities.

XTS-3000 Upgrade???
Hello everyone! Thanks for the fast replys. Doing some digging, it seems that this rumored upgrade would apply to XTS-3000 users that are on the Colorado State DTRS and cannot immediately obtain new equipment. I asked, again, how the current XTS-3000 (being 800mhz only) radio users would be affected when the state starts phasing in the 700mhz portion of the system and was told that these radio's would be "upgraded to continue operating on the system". No specific information on how they would be upgraded was available. I plan on obtaining my own XTS-3000. Our department currently is using XTS-3000 Model 2's, and are planning to obtain XTS-2500's in the future. Jay, we have no plans to obtain the XTS-5000. Any information on this would be very helpful! Again, thanks.
Re: XTS-3000 Upgrade???
Could this be just a firmware issue??? Seems like it would be cheaper to buy the XTS5000 which comes out of the box doing 700 Mhz. If not a firmware issue than what?? New RF deck??FiremanSparky wrote:Hello everyone! Thanks for the fast replys. - What radios do you own?: APX,XTS2500,XTL2500,XTL1500
There have been no changes to the FCC type acceptance for the XTS3000 radio to operate below 806MHz. The last update was in 2000 and it was an update to make the unit have variable power output from 2 to 3 watts.
The xts3k type acceptance # AZ489FT5774 can be looked up here:
https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/cf/e ... Search.cfm
and the last cover letter sent by Moto. can be seen here:
https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/form ... or_pdf=pdf
With no requests sent to the FCC to authorize operation below 806MHz I highly doubt that the radio will be "upgraded" to operate in 700 MHz and the cancellation of the product is the 1st quarter of next year. I doubt that Moto. is putting a lot of time and effort into re-engineering the xts3k for just 1 customer.

Hello and thanks for your replies. To make a long story short, the idea of "changing internal boards" was discussed during a system planning meeting (which is where this rumor began in the first place) quite sometime ago, but as the XTS-3000 was being discontinued next year, this idea didn't go very far. The decision was made to utilize the XTS-2500/5000 series for those agencies ordering new equipment, and when the 700 mhz portion of the system starts phasing in, POSSIBLY offer a trade-in allowance (unconfirmed) for those agencies still utilizing the XTS-3000 series to upgrade to the newer radios. I should have dug this info up before I posted my question! My motivation was the fact that as I plan on obtaining my own portable, the XTS-3000 would be cheaper to purchase used. Guess not.
Again, thanks and sorry if I wasted anyones time.
