XTS-3000 Conversion

Post by FiremanSparky »

Thought I had seen this discussed in a previous thread, but can't find it. As I have mentioned before, I wanted to obtain a used XTS-3000 for use on our state DTRS, but as the 700MHz phase-in is coming soon, I figured that I would go for a "real" XTS-5000 if I found one. However, the oportunity has presented itself as I could purchase a "legit" XTS-3000 Model II at a low price (and no, NOT from e-bay) for use in the near term. I want to convert it to a Model III. In addition to buying a new Model III casing and keypad, are there any additional hardware parts I would need to obtain? Are there any firmware or software/flashcode changes that would need to be made, or will programming changes via the CPS enable the keypad?

Perhaps one of our XTS experts will weigh in on this, but I think the only way that will work is to get the radio to take a Model III codeplug. I am sure Motorola can do that with LAB or DEPOT software, but I don't think the regular CPS or RSS will do it.

The only functional difference is that the Model III can make unlimited private and interconnect calls. The Model II can still make private and interconnect calls from a list - assuming it is programmed properly, authorized by the System Administrator, and enabled at the fixed end.

Yep, you'd need to get a model III codeplug into the radio for it to officially be a model III. The other advantage of having the radio a model III is that you can use the password feature on the radio. You'll need MTSX lab to do this.

Oh and with respect to hardware, make sure you get the rubber buttons as well as the actual model III keypad as well as the housing you mentioned.
