Connector Problem with belden 9913
Moderator: Queue Moderator
HI:
Before I do some homework, I thought
I would present this problem here 1st.
I have found 1000' feet of Brand New
belden 9913 / RG-8U Low Loss Coax. Has
a 10ga ( what I have been told ) Solid
Core Center Conductor ( Like Some Celwave Cable I have seen ) Was reported to have
been used for some 1Ghz Dish Feeds
Probably why it may have been abandoned.
A normal PL-259 ( King ) Plug can be used
on it with some Prep work. I have a
PL-259 Connector I cut in half to make
sure the cable fits properly as in " All " the Cables I assemble and it will fit
perfect if its prepared properly.
I do not like PL-259's ! But sometimes I
have to use them and I only use the Silver
Plated Teflon Types.
I hate jury rigging ( unless its a
emergency temp fix )
=========================================
<h3><b>The Problem:</h3>
I have not found a suitable Type "N" Plug that has a Center Pin that will fit the
Solid Core of the Cable. I have also been
informed the connectors have been designed
for 13ga, and that is to small for the 10ga
center pin of the 9913
I get this story to " Trim" the Center..Ya
right !, Instead, I just used a Short RG-214
Jumper at this time.
So, anyone out there know if there is a mfg
that has addressed the problem?
I have tried RF Industries, King, Amp, Jap Conectors....So far no luck
==========================================
And with respects to the LMR400, unable at
this time to check the distributor as its
Good Friday and all these mfgs have taken
a 3 day vacation.
In response to a fellow who posed the
LMR400 Question.

Even the 9913 Stranded that I used for Ham purposes needed a strand or two removed from the center conductor to fit into the standard PL-259 plug I had. I hate to do things like this but it has seemed to work fine.
I just used a good hot iron and hopefully the solder flowing through made up for the strand or two removed.
I would hate to deal with the solid conductor coax you have on a cold day. It would be pretty darn stiff!

RF Industries has the corrcet connectors for 9913 and LMR400, tinker Tally has them (make sure that the jerk at Tally gets the number correct!!). If I remeber, it has "SI" as a sufix.
I perfer the Times connectors for LMR400 and the price seems to be in line with RFI. They work for 9913 too.
Some PL259's work on 9913, and most do not, too small hole in the center pin on those.
BTW you can not "shave" down 9913, it has an aluminium center conductor with a copper-tin flashing to solder to, when the thin flashing is gone, NO solder!!!

Hi:
I will give them a call after Easter. I tried
talking to a couple of sales persons, but
they were clueless....I guess they may be
Brain Dead.
Anyhow, for those who may have never seen
the 9913 Cable, here is a photo in addition
to a Pl-259 prep Jig.
Thanks for the help !

All the 9913 cable I have ever used in the past, had a solid copper center conductor. As I don't use it anymore, the mfg. could have cheapened up the cable like all other companies and now make it copper plated aluminum. Still don't like it. Would still rather use the 1/2 inch heliax coax. For the slight increase in cost, it is a much better cable.
