Is this a good radio? Also I have read a lot of posts here about it getting updates, how do I know if the used radio I want to buy is fully updated and ready to go? Or do I even need the updates, gonna replace some maxtracs so we can eventually switch to LTR.

What radios do you own?: More than I can count

Definitly make sure it has the latest firmware in place, sent one radio back already. Our Police Dept had problems with earlier manufacure date radios with the MDC-1200 causing the radio to stay keyed up. and the TOT didn't work.

Don't use MDC decoding, don't even know what it is, I like the 1550 because it has ltr and passport capabilities, also I was told M would only sell the rss to dealers for the ht1250ls and cdm1550ls, is this not true? what did it cost, i have no problem calling them and getting a license, i just don't want to spend a buch of time on the phone if they will say, nope, can't have that one. Also do you know which handhelds will do passport roaming, Perthcomm knows butt i haven't seen him around.

I'm around
The portable version is the HT1250LS+
If you want to do Passport eventually, you will need the make sure you get the LS+ (plus) version of the radio. These have only been out a few months, so chances of getting a used PLUS radio is slim.

How many can I sell ya??
