What radios do you own?: APX4K, XTL5K, NX5200, NX700HK

I am trying to configure an STX-821's codeplug for programming. I've got everything I need, except for a problem I am having programming in talkgroups.

In the talkgroup programming mode, they give me a hex digit 'A' for the first digit. The systems I wish to monitor has an E prefix, and another a '0'. Does it matter if I want to program talkgroup 'E020' in as 'A020'? If not, how can I make that 'A' prefix into an 'E'.

I am also wondering how I can access a screen to allow me to alpha-tag the display.

Finally, is there a way to have the different systems on the rotary dial and have the keypad select talkgroups in that system, or, is the radio set-up so that you can select the system via keypad, then talkgroup via keypad. The software only allows 1 talkgroup per system on the rotary dial and I can't have this (although it would be convenient).

Thanks

To get alpha tag capability, you go into "radio configuration" (F4, F2 from main menu). The first option is "rotary type". Set that to "none" and you should see "mode names" pop up on the right hand side of the screen, which you can then enable. This will allow you to set a single system, with all the alpha tagged talkgroups available through the keypad. As you have stated, with the rotary knob enabled, you can only set up one talkgroup per rotary knob position, and the display is limited to "1A", "2A", etc.

Now that you have the rotary knob disabled, when you go into the talkgroup screen (F4, F3, F7 from main menu), you will see a list of 16 positions, lettered A to P, where you can enter the talkgroup ID in Hex. By the way, the highest talkgroup ID is "FFE", so your "E020" example isn't valid. Post with any other questions you may have.

Thanks for the help.

Let me say, first, that I got my info from my trunker program, and trunkedradio.net
The talkgroups issued through the trunker program gives 4 digit hex codes. The first digit is always the same (like E or 0). I think I saw an Excel worksheet that converts the trunker hex codes to hex digits that can be programmed into the STX. I will look at that again.

How have others been programming their trunked radios from a trunker- talkgroup finding program?

Also, am I only allowed a maximum of 16 talkgroups per system? If so, does the radio allow multiple-system scan? I'm sure this one varies radio to radio.

If all of your TG ID's end with zero, then you are most likely safe to drop the zero off. If you want to be sure, open the file that Trunker saved for you that has the TG ID's in it. In that file, each ID has a hex id and a decimal id.

To convert the decimal ID, divide it by 16 then convert it to hex. The formula for Excel is this

=DEC2HEX(C419/16)

Where C419 is the column that contains the decimal TG ID. You may have to enable the Analysis Toolpak from within the Excel setup in order to use the DEC2HEX & HEX2DEC.

By the way, this is the excel formula to calculate for maxtrac TG ID:

=SUM(C419/16)+800000

Again C419 is the decimal TG ID.

If your radio has A GPL or GPS version board, and it has a top rotary switch you do not need to disable it to have ALPHA, It will do ALPHA and still enable you to use the top switch, if it is a REL version board, then the advice given above is correct and you must disable the switch as selecting talkgroups. You can depending on how you configure it, use the front keypad to select talkgroups, ie: talkgroup 5(E is reached by hitting the #2 digit on the key pad twice to to reach the corresponding letter , that are in groups of 3 on each numeric key. 1 ABC , 2 DEF...etc. What version board do you have in your radio???

O.k.

I figured it out last night that all I needed to do was drop the trailing zero. But, two of the talkgroups I have on my list are 000b and a057- Uh oh, these two talkgroups are 4 hex digits and connot be converted to 3- or is there? Any ideas? 000b is supposed to be a regular talkgroup (dec 11), and a057 is a 'fleetwide simulcast' although it is a straight type II system.

BTW, the radio is the model that Monty is selling, with the GPL/GPS processor
