Question on remote install of Maxtrac 300

O.K. - Forgive me if this was covered somewhere - I searched till I was blue in the face and couldn't find it.

Anyone have any good (i.e. cheap) alternatives to the Quick Mount kit for remote install of a Maxtrac 300 ?

I have a VHF Low Band 6ch w/ 5 Pin Acc. connector model.

I had access to a quickmount kit to take pictures and (attempt) to replicate the circuit board but I'm having trouble with the relay on their c.b. (I am NOT an electronic type person).

After talking to a couple of local electronics types - I was curious if I even needed the relay/diode set-up they had or the resistor (appears to be 2.7K Ohm).

Any advice, parts list, How-to's, schematics, etc. from someone who's already been down this path before would be greatly appreciated.
