HT1550 Field Programmable??

Read something on the internet the other day and want to know if it's true or not. Motorola coming 4th Qtr of 2002! The Motorola HT-1550 will become field programmable just like the JT1000! There will be a special battery that comes with a circut or special diode that will allow FULL programming of the radio from the radio itself

Hi, I have a HT1550 and if I use the battery from my ht750 on the 1550 the battery meter will not work. If I put the same battery on the ht1250 the meter will not work on it either. Same battery numbers. But switching the battery disables the meter. What do you guys make of this? Darrell

The problem with the Battery guage meter is the older batteries, the DELTA chip used in thee batteries was not programmed for the HT1550, the newer batteries the chip was changed to work with the HT1550. This pertaines to many aftermarket manufacturers also, Multiplier has fixed this problem for all batteries made after May 2002.

I guess the HT1550 was an after thought.

Motorola will be releasing this battery It is just awaiting FCC approval. I will post again when I get a date.

the next thing motorola needs to come out with is a AA or AAA battery pack for the ht1250s and ht1550s

It is tentative for OCTOBER 2002. So it would be safe to say October 2003.

I have extended warranty on all my radios So I send them all in for firmware upgrades as the /\/\ changes some stuff.

Well, to figure this out - you would need to figure out how the battery communicates with the radio.

Each of the batteries have a small chip on them, maybe someone has one they can toss through a chip reader or something like that to find out what kind of brains the battery has. Then, you could take that information and figure out possibly what the trigger is for the field programmability. I think that would be moving on the right track.

Also - why do the batteries have 2 sets of contacts - as far as I can tell the HT1550/1250 share the same contacts - i'm guessing the 1250 uses the lower ones?

correct the 1250 uses lower contacts and 1550 USES the upper contacts.

Possibly Motorola might use this thing:http://www.ibutton.com/ibuttons/index.html

It "looks" like a battery, but can have info. programmed in it. Possibly they could have a special code for dealers (or us) to limit what can be programmed through the keypad. Then, they could have an all-access "lab" version that will unlock everything...
