SHORT ASTRO SABER BATTERY
Moderator: Queue Moderator
I know this has come up before: Does anyone make a battery that is shorter than the 3.25 inch Motorola Battery? I have the shortest one Battery Zone makes and it's the same size. I need something that is very low profile and talk time isn't a concern. I have seen a battery that is 2.5 inches but couldn't get any imformation off it, anyone know who makes this?

The three battery sizes for Saber/Astro Sabers:
Ultra high capacity NiCd: NTN4595C
4" height
High capacity NiCd: NTN4593D
High capacity int. safe NiMh: NTN7251A
Just under 3 and 1/4 inch height
Medium capacity: NTN4592C (the shortest pack available for any Saber type radio)
Just over 2 and a quarter inches tall. good for light duty without much transmitting. Can last for up to 8 hours if you dont' transmit at all.

Also look into Multiplier NiMH batteries. I'm not sure if they make a short one, but the full height hi-capacity Multiplier Saber battery is 2700mAH compared to the 1800mAH from the NiCd Motorola battery.
Now don't get me wrong, if Motorola made a NiMH or even LiIon Saber battery, you'd bet I'd buy some. But they don't (at least none I'm aware of) and these Multiplier batteries are made as good as OEM as far as I can tell.
They need to be charged on a tri-chem or iTech/JBro/etc battery charger that understands how to charge NiMH, but I've been very pleased with the amount of receive and talk time I get out of the Multiplier batteries.

I've had real good luck with the Battery Zone 4595 Ni-MH which is also 2700 mah also. I have the shorter Battery Zone battery and it works better than tall OEM battery but the real short stubby battery is what I really want. I was just told Alexander Batteries and Jbro make shorter batteries, I'll have to check them out.
We just got a bunch of Ultra High Capacity Multiplier batteries for the XTS-3000 portables and they SUCK! They don't connect to the radio worth a damn, they wiggle around and loose contact. They defintly need to redesign the way the battery connects to the radio. I think Tessco is going to be getting them back. But when they work they last longer than the OEM batteries.

Motofanatic, Motorola DOES make a NiMH Saber/Astro Saber battery.
NTN8251AR is the part number. It's the
'high capacity' medium size. 1650 mA.
I have two '95 date coded NiMH batteries
on Astro Sabers that have the part number
of NTN7251A but that doesn't come up in a search and doesn't cross-reference.

Hey Elroy, thanks you're right. You know, I think I may even have one of those med-cap NiMH lying around somewhere but it's so old, it won't even hold a charge.
I actually was referring to the hopes that Motorola had a hi-cap NiMH Saber battery > 2000mAH. The hi-cap batteries give you a longer radio to wield when self defence is necessary!
