2004 Ford Explorer XLT Install Help

Post by firemed9 »

Ladies and Gentlemen,
This is a new one for me. I have never installed anything in a Ford SUV so I have some questions on this one.

1) Where can I go through the fire wall?
2) How hard is it to mount hide-a-way strobes in the headlights?
3) How hard is it to mount hide-a-way strobes in the taillights?
4) Any problems with running strobe cables i should know about?

I am mounting a A9 Spectra (vhf) with siren in this also. I plan on mounting both units under the rear passenger seat. Has anyone had issues with mounting a strobe pack too close to the radio and causing interference, or can I mount the strobe pack under there also? (I have never installed both a A9 and strobe pack together before)

I am using a jottodesk console, with only the A9 and two DEK's. How hard is it going to be to run the cabling to the console from the rear passenger seat? Is there anything under the floor mat I am going to have to worry about? The console that is already in place has heating ducts. Am I going to have to do anything special because of them?

What you're doing is an easy one. All is easy access. The only thing I don't like is headlight strobes- they work better in the corner lights.

Firewall access: right side, lower firewall. There's PLENTY of room for drilling.

Jim, We are getting new 2004 explorer 4 doors in at work. Never worked on this vehicle before, and am putting in the havis 30" console with the storage box in it. Any problem removing the factory console or things to worry about..Thanks, Rob

If you don't need a large console, the Jotto-Desk OEM-type insert looks perfect. If you remove the OEM, you have a large spot on the floor with no carpeting.

The Jotto Desk holds at least 3 units. Email me if you want pics of one I just did for Pittsburgh.

I have had a problem in the past with installing strobes in a vehicle with the Motorola siren amp hooked up to a VHF Spectra. Once in a while if the user tried to turn on the siren it would not activate. The radio had to be powered down then turned back on to work again. I traced this to the strobe that was installed in the rear window of the vehicle. This was the only one...but you never know until you try.

ok so i'm not the only one who couldn't figure out that....
that's not so much a vehicular install problem as it is a shoddy installation problem. I'd not blame the vehicle as fast as i'd blame the strobe putter-inner.

Just did a ford ranger with strobes that has 2 spectras plus the VRS and siren units. Strobe pack is installed properly even though its quite close to the siren and VRS units. We have no problems with it at all.
